BASE CHARACTER PROFILE -- PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE SHOULD ONLY BE
ONE WORD ANSWERS (Except where noted.)
Name: Azriel "Az" Gideon Griffin
LJ: capricious_az
Played By/Physical Description:
Chris Pratt

Az looks pretty much like a bigger version of his little brother. He's a shade under 6' and still a wiry kid, although he's starting to grow into himself-his hands and feet don't look too big for the rest of him, as they did a couple years ago. While Az used to keep his curly, ash-blond hair cropped close to his head like his younger brother does, he's been going through an experimental phase, as all teenagers do, and it is currently about ear-length-just long enough to be embarrassingly poufy and make him look like Bozo the Clown without a dye job. His skin is getting slightly better than his brother's, and he's mastered shaving (although "mastery" involved another "experimental" phase his classmates will remember from a few months ago, when he tried to grow a blond Fu Manchu.), but he generally has a few scabby things from his bad habit of picking at his spots. He has light blue eyes and the same fair-ish skin tone-although his chest is completely pasty if you happen to glimpse him without a shirt. His most telling feature is the bump in his otherwise perfectly ordinary nose- broken in a broom-riding accident a couple years ago.

Age/Birthdate:April 9, 1988
Gender: Male
Wand: Hawthorn, 10", dragon heartstring. Fairly thick in diameter.
Blood: Half-Blood (Muggle-born mother)
Birthplace: Stoke-on-Trent,
England
Location: Chester, England
Status or Class: Middle Class
Pet Name/Species: Tiger, a Natterjack Toad

OWL Scores (For 1-7th Years):
Astronomy: D
Charms: E
DADA: E
Herbology: E
History of Magic: D
Potions: O
Transfiguration: O
Muggle Studies: T
Divination:O

(Az is the kind of student who only concentrates on the classes he's actually interested in, thus very disparate scores all around-- except for Muggle Studies, which is where you can kind of see his ego getting the better of him-someone decided to write his entire exam about The Genius of Monty Python.)
NEWT Scores: (Projected):
Charms: E
DADA: A, possibly E
Herbology: A,possibly E
Potions: E
Transfiguration: O
Divination: O

Divination and Transfiguration are definitely Az's best subjects by far...he likes Potions a lot but at the higher level he's not as exceptional as he was in the easier levels.

Herbology & DADA have the same problems for him and his marks are slipping in those, but he's a very dedicated student in the courses he's chosen so he's hoping to blow everyone away.

10 Words to describe your character: Protective, stubborn, flamboyant, rash, active, practical, gregarious, fickle, affectionate, fierce

EXTENDED APPLICATION --

PLEASE DO AT LEAST A PARAGRAPH ON EACH OF THESE, UNLESS THEY ARE STATED TO BE OPTIONAL

Personality:

Az is the kind of boy who exudes easy confidence-- He's the first to volunteer for anything, the one at the head of the line, the sort to show first-years around and the sort to never turn down a dare. It's not always certain to those who know him well if the bright, gregarious exterior is a sort of defense mechanism for actually having rather low self-esteem. He doesn't take criticism well at all, and he can be somewhat moody in that something like a stubbed toe or a spilled butterbeer will make him grouchy for the rest of the day-- until something good happens, and then his crankiness will be replaced by utter exuberance-- until something bad happens. It's a sort of vicious cycle, and something that can make him laugh out loud one day might insult him the next. Most of the time he's cheerful, but it's hard to say quite what will set him off when he's unhappy.

He is fiercely, fiercely protective of his younger brother, to the point that despite the fact that he'll tease and bully and call him names, if someone else doesit to Asher, that person better be either bigger or faster than Azriel, or they can expect to get socked in the jaw. He behaves similarly with his friends-- he can be quite obnoxious and even hurtful in his need for attention and his hijinks and teasing, but his intentions are good, and he'd never realize he's hurting them. At the same time, he'd still stick up for them no matter what.

He has a short attention span for things that don't interest him, but he can get intense when he's dealing with something he likes-- and this goes for people, too. He's rather stubborn and picky and impatient but also very highly focused on things once something has gotten through to him. He's really an all-or-nothing sort of person.

As much as he acts out, he also has complete respect for authority, as long as he
feels he's being treated with respect. A professor who tells him outright that he's
being a jerk is more likely to be met with an apology than someone who yells at him
or punishes him.

Strengths:
Magical: Az excels in practicalities. The magic he likes best is the magic that lets him do things, not study things. His best subjects are Transfiguration, Divination, and Potions, followed by Charms, followed by DADA and finally, Herbology...which mostly seems to interest him for the possibility of "smoking it," something he whispers in class somewhat often, although he is rather more of a goody-two-shoes than he would like people to think and wouldn't ever smoke anything. He went to Muggle grammar school and got SMOKING IS BAD FOR YOU hammered into his skull.

Personality: Az is, as above, incredibly focused on the things that interest him and can really excel if he likes something. He is also open and friendly and good with younger kids, making him a good leader-type...as long as he's not leading people into trouble. He is also respectful of authority when he has to be, and he is a tremendously loyal and loving brother and friend.

Weaknesses:
Magical: Az gets bored easily and is terrible with memorization. So magic that requires a strong memory isn't his best suit...he's never done well in history classes, and in the more difficult classes, memorizing complicated spells or recipes is starting to get to him. Getting into heavy "theory" is also not his strong suit, and he's not super creative with making up his own spells. He also really doesn't pay attention to things unless he's interested in them.

Personality: Az is fickle and moody and can scare people off or hurt their feelings easily without intending to. He also can drift from one project to another, or from one friend to another, or one girl to another, because his attention span is the sort where he gets scarily focused on something for a while...and then moves on. He isn't too open with his feelings and sometimes his brave front can alienate people when he really needs people around. He lives by extremes, and can do rash and clumsy things because of it. He is also not very self-aware-- he can see faults in other people but not recognize them in himself.

Fears/Motivations:
Az's father left when he was just a very little boy, and he has a sort of severe separation anxiety because of this. He gets angry at his friends over the summer or when they have to leave for holidays, and he is moody about leaving his family when he gets to school every fall. He also went through four years as a toddler when he had decided he was the "man of the house" and this has made him very protective of his mother and his siblings. He is terrified of something happening to his family, but you wouldn't know it to talk to him.

Az also worries a lot that he won't live up to his parents' (his moher and stepfather; he's become quite close with his stepdad, actually) expectations of him. He's getting to the age where he's wondering about his father because he's doing the typical Oh-No-I'm-Leaving-School crisis of character, and he thinks that if he knew more about his real father, he might be able to figure out more about himself. It's not something he desperately has to know, but he still wonders.

History:
Azriel was born in Stoke-on-Trent in April, 1988, to Elizabeth Rose Griffin, a Muggle-born witch. He only vaguely recollects his biological father, a man who left when he was two. He was too young to really understand that his father had gone for good, but his mum had a New Baby shortly after, so Az decided he was the Man of the House and started bossing everyone around and "taking care" of his mother and baby brother, Asher, at the ripe old age of two.

Azriel wasn't particularly aware that he was a wizard, and his mother never really brought it up with them, although her work exposed him to both worlds-- but for a toddler, there's not really much difference to tell, and if he told Muggles about magic wands or something, well, don't all four-year-olds do that? When he was six, his mother married a Muggle man named Simon and even the fleeting glimpses he'd had into the Wizarding world were closed off-- not that Az
particularly remembered them.

When Elizabeth told Az she was getting married to his new stepfather, Azriel promptly packed up two comic books, a bag of crisps, and his stuffed cat, and ran away. Unfortunately, their home at the time was on a major intersection and he wasn't allowed to cross the street without a grown up. So he ended up sitting on the corner until suppertime, when Simon came out to get him.

From then on, he decided maybe he could let Simon pretend to be Man of the House and he could sometimes share his mother, so they entered a tentative friendship. He soon became quite close with his stepfather and while he's never quite been able to see Simon as his father, he definitely considers him a friend, and it's Simon that he goes to with things he's embarrassed to talk to his mum about.

Azriel went to Muggle schools, where he definitively shortened his first name to Az because Azriel got funny looks. He did moderately well in some of his classes but wasn't a very attentive student and didn't really shine in any subjects. Then around the time he turned ten, he started getting into trouble-- getting blamed for accidents, and while the school insisted he get his eyes tested and poor Az didn't know what to make of it, his mother seemed to laugh it off. Az struggled through the first half of the schoolyear until, when he turned eleven, he received his Hogwarts letter. And then his mother had quite a bit of explaining to do.

For Azriel, being a wizard really excited him and finally got him interested in school. It was something special that he could excel in, even if he was going to a school where all the kids excelled in it, and he felt like it was a chance for him to finally be good at something-- it explained to him why he had never been able to focus on his work in Muggle school.

Getting sorted into Hufflepuff was a great deal of help for him because it helped him get his nose to the grindstone and keep it there in his early years-- it focused his work ethic and made him feel proud to be a hard worker. His absolute loyalty to his family and friends also made him very well-suited for Hufflepuff.

Significant Relationships:

Family: Azriel is extremely close with his entire family, but he is especially protective of his brother, Asher, who is a fifth-year Gryffindor. He was probably a little disappointed when Asher didn't wind up in Hufflepuff with him. The two of them are a little less than two years apart, and they have been close their entire lives. He has a little sister, Shelby, and he's not really sure what to make of her, although he loves her very much, she's, well, a girl.

Azriel has a very special relationship with his mother and with Asher because with his father absent, he really did have a big influence in his little brother's babyhood, and he tried to act older and more serious when he was a small child in order to "replace" his missing father.

He also is very close with his stepfather, but that's a different kind of relationship, because he looks at Simon more as a good pal and mentor.

His biological father holds a sort of mysterious place in Azriel's life, and is the source of many questions that don't really have answers. Most of the time he doesn't even think about him, but when he starts getting self-reflective, then he thinks about his father a lot.

Friends: Azriel is extremely close with Nico, Rupert, Jojo, and Bryant, from his year. He's also friendly with Suzanne.

Other: Az has a really hopeless crush on Dari at the moment.

Special Considerations: Azriel did have a broom, but he probably doesn't have one anymore since he sort of smashed that one into a wall and broke his nose a while back. He is
probably saving his pocket money to buy himself a new one, but I don't know that that's happened yet.

Year: 7
House: Hufflepuff

Why are they in that house?

Azriel is staunchly, fiercely loyal to his family and friends. While he might have ended up in another house (his interest in practical magic might have pushed him to Ravenclaw, his brazenness and confident nature could have sent him to Gryffindor), Hufflepuff was probably the best house for helping him become more suited to the Wizarding World-not only did it put him in a place where loyalty to his peers was encouraged, but it also helped him focus and learn the value of working hard...well, working hard for the things that were important to him. Since Az is the kind of person to naturally like anyone and is rarely judgmental in his first impressions, he very much lives up to the Hufflepuff ideal of "taking the lot." While he'll think ill of someone once he's gotten to know them and decided they're not a pleasant person, he usually holds out hope for a really long time before coming to that conclusion.
