Taking a break from my procrastination...

I am slowly working on my paper today- revising my methods section. I am over the teabagging party political coverage....but read something today that got my mind thinking about this whole Texas-secession issue. Melissa Harris-Lacewell (love her!) in her blog with fellow Princeton professor Yolanda Pierce, The Kitchen Table(love this blog!) wrote ( Read more... )

Pretty weird...yeah, we can be. (Wasn't raised in Texas, but born in the state, and moved to the state about 8 years ago.)

Honestly, other than a brief mention in the news...I've hardly heard it mentioned.

It seems like its been fairly prominent in the national news that I watch/read. And I don't mean to offend you or anything, its just a definite difference in culture between MN and TX. I visited once for an ASK convention and it was just a weird experience. Of course, the people I met weren't weird or anything (well, ASK's can be a bit nerdy-weird, but that's not unusual for me:) ) and I can't describe exactly why its different either which isn't helpful.

I do know that one of the only times I've felt pretty close to full-on seeing red blind rage was in some of the tourist shops we went to during the convention. Some of the Native stuff was just so offensive, I had to leave or I was going to hit someone or throw up. So that didn't help my impression much. Sorry to rant about texas. :)

I'd say that there are very different notions of being "relaxed" - the definition that means 'accepting' rather than "at ease" in the parts of the country that contain Texas and Minnesota.

I have a feeling the media's milking this story for all its worth...haven't heard any announcement about a change in my citizenship, or any such news. ;-)

If you went to Dallas for convention, try visiting Austin at some point, and Houston for contrast. Very, very different cultures in each of the 3 cities.
