Good readers pay attention to when a character acts ‘out of character’ and ask, “Why did the author make the decision to have the character act this way?” They then try to answer that question with specific details from the text.
I REMEMBER DOING A CHARACTER STUDY OF THE A:TLA GIRLS FOR A COLLEGE PAPER I WROTE. WHEN I CAME TO KATARA I REALIZED THAT OUTSIDE OF HER (COMPLETELY JUSTIFIED) "FEMINIST RAGE" EPISODES, SHE STILL COMPLIES WITH THE SOCIETAL NORMS AND MORES FOR WOMEN.
I PARSED IT AS KATARA BELIEVING THAT FEMINISM WAS ABOUT CHOICE. SHE'S OKAY WITH ACTING THAT WAY, SO LONG AS EVERYONE REALIZES THAT IT'S HER CHOICE TO ACT HOWEVER SHE WANTS. SEE: BEING TOTALLY FINE WITH SEWING UP SOKKA'S PANTS UNTIL HE SAYS IT'S THE KIND OF THING WOMEN ARE *SUPPOSED* TO BE DOING.
