That sounds really cool! I've walked the path by the river several times, but never in the dark; I can imagine how still and magestic the river must look by starlight. Though getting lost on farm tracks in thick fog in the middle of the night sounds a bit hardcore...
(I did once tell a girl who was scrounging for money at about 10pm, ostensibly for a bus fare to Ely, that it was a nice walk and doable in a few hours. Does that make me a bad person?)
It was rather! We were pretty weirded out by the sound, and ended up having to go lights-out before we were able to spot the arcs. One of my first thoughts on recognising it as mechanical (rather than some very odd bird) was the fear that it was a crashed car with electrical systems going a bit haywire, so we called out as we approached. Glad it wasn't anything that bad.
