Character timeline: post-Season Four

continued from GalaxyGab Op-Ed

There is nothing out of the ordinary in the daily security report, save for one alien transmission. It appears not to have originated from any of the local planetary sytems. Braca scrolls through the translated data, and finally reaches the pertinent section, highlighted for his attention.

His mouth falls open as he reads. "What!" A flush of anger heats his face, and he punches the scroll control harder and harder as he runs through the rest of the section. He reads it again, and then a third time.

This explains why the officer delivering the chip wouldn't meet his eyes, and why she practically bolted from the chamber.

The gleefully eager words drill into Miklo's brain. "What does Scorpius' apparent new fetish mean? Could he be angling towards some sort of twisted threesome with John Crichton and Aeryn Sun? Only time will tell!"

As if Scorpius would ever lower himself to consort with a renegade like Sun, a traitor. At least that Kalish woman is gone, with her smug contempt and haughty airs. Satisfaction briefly surges through Braca at the thought. And Crichton is being kept under firm control.

That Scorpius would have pursued the Human for some insane personal lust is both ludicrous and infuriating. How has this alien come to have such intimate knowledge? While the bare facts are true, the sheer lunacy of the interpretation leaves Miklo breathless with rage.

Scorpius is where he belongs, aboard Braca's vessel, working toward shared Peacekeeper goals. This malicious rumor will not be allowed to destroy them.

It's with a grim expression that Braca calls Security and orders the chief officer to his quarters. This information could potentially ruin Scorpius' career, which already hangs by the thin thread of Braca's authority as Captain. If Scorpius falls, Braca is sure to fall with him. There have been too many commanders lost, and the superstition of a jinxed officer is not unknown in crews far from their home territory.

He snaps off the terminal and pockets the chip. Microts later, the Chief of Security enters. He stands before the desk, eyes straight ahead, spine stiff, face carefully blank.

Braca takes care to maintain tight control of his voice. "Find the source of this transmission," he orders. "I want every possible detail." He briskly returns the man's salute.

After a few moments, Miklo Braca leaves his quarters. He marches through the corridors, feeling as if every eye is on him. The skin of his back crawls.

There can be only one explanation for this. The Human must have spread these lies in order to discredit Scorpius. Crais had said nothing of the sort, according to his interrogation logs. Aeryn Sun would never speak of such things. But Crichton never shuts up; the frelling fool babbles endlessly to anyone he sees, and Braca has experienced the vicious taunts and innuendo himself.

He will speak to Crichton. But not now, not while in the grip of this raw emotion. Emotion has been the ruin of Crais and Sun and Grayza, and even Scorpius has at times succumbed. But Captain Miklo Braca will not repeat their mistakes.

The march through the Command deck has worked off the immediate rage, and Braca returns to his quarters with a slower stride. He finds a message waiting. The origin of the alien signal is an empty section of space several metras distant. The precise location, in fact, of John Crichton's wormhole.

The wormhole. Braca sneers, recalling the allegation of the alien document. This only confirms his belief. Yes, a conversation with Crichton is definitely in order.

He checks the time. It's been arns since the trial ended. According to surveillance logs, Scorpius is working in the laboratory assigned to his project. Crichton is in the quarters he shares with Aeryn Sun. Hmm. A security flag is appended to the file.

Braca's lip curls as he reads the audio transcript. He's just as glad not to have visual evidence of Sun's contamination. But they'll be asleep now, likely. Perfect.

Crichton is an insolent, inferior creature. He's mocked Braca, assaulted him and been nothing but a pain in the eema since their first meeting. Now it's time for another rematch. This time, however, they are on Miklo Braca's deck, playing by his rules.

He's not going to be the Human's patty anymore.
