already planning this year's garden. i may start seeds next week in planters in the other room. is it way too early to do this? last year i started stuff inside way too late (april) and was disappointed by bum crops. anybody got any advice ( Read more... )

leggy = overstretching.

to prevent that you may try hardening the plants before they go outside. even though this says a week, i usually do this for about 2-3 weeks.

they should be able to take their normal amount of sun for at least 8 hours (a full day's worth) without being distressed. This helps them from being willowy and overstretched.

it's not too early to plan, i started a few weeks ago because i want to rip out all the beds in the front and actually plant something *I* want there.

as for seeds, i don't plan to do any this year in the house. i'll direct sow.

if you figure that seedlings can be planted around the 2nd week in May, work backwards to see when your crops will mature and you should have a decent start date. I'd probably wait until 2nd week in March, then give them a full month to grow, then harden them for the last few weeks. they'll be tough enough to be outdoors by then.
