Last night, I was lucky enough to snag a ticket to the opening night of Don Giovanni at the Seattle Opera! I was so excited I could hardly stand it. It was my first time to see a live opera as well as to check out McCaw Hall. Yay

What you see as "pecking" is actually everyone using the knowledge they have accrued over the past 4, 5, or however many years of singing and listening to opera. Some people know what they like to hear and some people know what they want to sound like someday. I think it is good to make those connections and it shows that we are listening and able to listen to detail. Talking during intermission on the mezzanine is probably one of the only times that we are able to all get together and discuss, which is why it has become sort of a tradtion, if you will, for CWU opera to meet out there and discuss.
I liked the lecture. I knew the story, but I enjoyed hearing the different musical themes presented in a way that was easy for me to pick out later. The Director of Education also did a good job of raising questions for us to answer ourselves, rather than answering them for us, which is what happens so often with professors. It was a nice change.
Glad you liked your first opera! My first was Cosi fan tutte.
i wasn't meaning to offend. i appreciate educated conversation, that's how we learn, you are completely right. there were a couple people speaking specifically negatively. they are who i was referencing. i enjoyed talking during intermission and even afterwards, i just felt that a some comments didn't need to be said.
i think i would have gotten more from the lecture if i had been to more. as my first i didn't really know what to make of it.
i REALLY want to see Cosi - i'm definitely glad that my first was Mozart. He's a good trainer for operatic listening.
