The cruft in my system is beginning to reach dangerous levels. WinDVD and MediaPlayer sputter away helplessly when trying to play DVD's although KMPlayer is fine. Halo's frame rate drops to about 5 FPS after KMPlayer has been doing stuff even if the latter is no longer running and occasionally unknown sub-programs report an inability to do whatever ( Read more... )

i have a friend studying in london who is mad at the city for being difficult to navigate and being not-obvious-enough about its holidays.

Really? When there are so many better reasons to dislike the place? Dirt, traffic, crime. The holiday thing I can see though:
"What do you mean the shops are shut? It's Monday!"
"Yes, but it's the last Monday in August."
"So?"

The real reason she's upset is that she got the wrong date for guy fawkes & went to some park for fireworks & nothing happened. And only a couple of people dressed up for Halloween. But I only saw a couple of strangers dressed up Halloween-style in Seattle, too... She's also admitted that she's not much of a city girl. And, you know, city = dirt, traffic, crime. amongst other things.

Yeah, we really don't do much Halloween in the UK. This particularly sucks if you are a child who is expecting a decent haul from trick or treating because you are going to be severely disappointed. In fact, now I think about it, I didn't go trick or treating as a child.
