the story is terrible and so is the way it's written. why does the author refer to the victims repeatedly as "whores" or "tart", especially considering that they were killed because they resisted the sex slave scheme?

Basically, because it's The eXile. The paper is essentially written by the most jaded hacks on the face of the earth so they aim for the blackest gallows humour imaginable. It is Maxim written by 50 something alcoholics. Occasionally something gets through the cynicism and they let you know they're still human. This article is them actually being pretty sensitive. As a long time eXile reader I can tell the writer is actually horrified by this. What is especially depressing is that this is near enough the only coverage it's getting.
It's particularly appalling to me because 5 women who worked as prostitutes were strangled in the UK recently and it was front page news for a week.
There was a satirical show called "Not The Nine O'Clock News" in the UK who did a sketch on how all news reporting is ultimately domestic, it's just rare to see something so stark it's a parody of itself.
It's not just that it has to be domestic. Here in the U.S., if you're black and poor and die tragically, no one gives a shit. But if a single white girl goes missing, holy crap, front page news for weeks (Chandra Levy? Elizabeth Smart? Samantha Runion? Lacy Peterson?).
I'm surprised that the deaths of the UK prostitutes even got coverage.
Anyway, it would probably take at least 300 dead Russians for it to get a foothold in the news. That's about how many had to die in Juarez, Mexico before anyone noticed, and that's actually close enough to the U.S. border for it to have some domestic relevance here.
