Question about computer antivirus

What's your opinion of the freeware Microsoft Security Essentials? Good? Bad? Better than anything you can buy at Office Depot? Not worth the time to download? Doesn't work?

A few months ago an IT friend of mine recommended it as one of the best- much better than Norton. I haven't had it long, but I have no complaints so far.

When it was tested by all kinds of folks when it came out the consensus was you don't really need to pay for security for windows any more if you don't want to - it works as well as or better than most other things out there. As far as I know, that's still the case.
I do use spybot on top of it, though, as I did when I used norton.
