rome's phenomenal. i need to go back now that i'm old enough to actually appreciate stuff. i'm getting more and more interested in going to that amsterdam masters program the closer graduation gets. too bad i didn't bother applying for a fulbright...doh.
I'm going to Italy this winter, day after Christmas. I've been to Rome before, but I'm going back there, Florence, and Ravenna (gotta see the Justinian and Theodora mosaic!) I wasn't that excited about Florence, either, but now I'm taking a course on the Italian renaissance and it'll be cool to see everything I'm reading about so $*#$ much.
My lively, globe-hopping grandma always goes places with tours. She goes off on her own plenty, but everywhere she goes she'll go with some organized group. And she's been doing this for 30 years, and has hit all of Europe (I'm pretty sure literally. I know for a fact: Spain, France, Italy, Greece, and Germany), Brazil, Egypt, the rest of North Africa, and Hong Kong. So, if she likes going with a tour, it's something I feel pretty solid in recommending. The point is that you don't stay with them the whole time, but it's nice to have something to go back to.
