Moving Away

May 03, 2006 00:35

In a couple weekends I'm going on a roadtrip (read: adventure with liz) across New York state in order to evaluate places to live. Yes, I'm leaving Fredonia after nearly 8 years and headed to beautiful Location X.

The question is, where?

I'm looking for another teaching job within 25 miles of a nice town SOMEWHERE in NY. Any suggestions?

in my job search i've been coming across a lot of places that are looking for teachers next year,
so you might want to check out americasjobbank.com or just the quest job search at fredonia.edu/cdo

also, i swear i will reclaim my desk! sooon! i even found the instructions for it so i can dismantle it.

I do like the free job search at the CDO....

Oh, the desk, yeah anytime in the next few weeks so long as you give me advance notice.
One more thing - Cody at Southpaw signs has signed the receipt, and it was turned in to the SA office so they can make a photo copy of it and I can give it back to him when we get the sign. He SHOULD be working on it now.

The number for Southpaw Signs is 716-672-7446 if you feel the need to call. Everyone else, give the man your business. He's nice.

you know what i'm going to say.

long island. TeachNY is a great initiative program, they'll pay some of your housing costs, etc. if you teach in some of the troubled city schools, so that's an option... if you want. ;)

also, check out http://www.olasjobs.org/longisland if you're interested. it's free registration and you can search all of the jobs that are available on long island.

move closer!!! queens is a blast, the city isn't that far, and long island is fun toooooo! (you don't have to stay forever...)

Long island is a scary place, as much as I like the east point. The draw to downstate is the glob of people I know that are moving down there as well - you, brett, charlotte, short, krajewski, chad williams, the Riley's, etc etc etc etc etc. It's the anti-buffalo.

seriously? scary? wow.

it's not THAT bad... sheesh. and if some of your good friends are moving here/already live here, then why not give it a shot? i mean, you're looking for something new and different, right?

just sayin'. don't judge a place before you live there. :P you'd have TONS of improv outlets, theater, culture, easy access to the city, and from there the possibilities are endless. and long island, while you may say it's scary, is fun, and easy to get around once you get used to it.

so nyah.

I don't mean scary like my "neighbor likes to wave guns around," scary. More like crowded-scary. But you are right, that isn't a fair representation of most of long-island, just the parts I remember.

Unfortunately for all these places, I have (so far) 9 criteria to judge them before I live there. And most of them are quasi-silly to anyone else but me. I think I need more serious ones, like "close to hospital" or some-such.

Oh, and I don't like NYC-proper.
Can't put my finger on it completely, just don't.

Little Falls is great. So are Mohawk and Herkimer. Mount Markham is very small but they have great community support for extracurriculars and education. Umm... just don't go to Frankfort, Ilion, Proctor or Rome. Lots of problems with budgets and buerocratic shit.

I did like Herkimer! but teaching earth science there would REQUIRE me to take field trips to the quartz mines. :)

I suggest subscribing to www.nyeducationjobs.com - Rob was on there when he was looking - it costs like $5 a month and you can look at every job posting in the state. It's pretty cool :)

You can also look at it without subscribing, you just don't get to see EVERYTHING on there.

Hmm, how can I be sure it is EVERY job listing? (actually, one of the reasons for the road trip is also to look at the postings that are listed only on the boards in the schools. And to look at those schools that have the jobs :)

By the way, that Drew Icon is Fantastic.

Thanks for the tips

i just read in the leader that only 20% of vacancies are listed on the internet per day. (or something like that you'll have to read the article)
