I had a couple of days off from work, which I chose to spend at the theater--catching up on seeing some good flicks.
Thursday was "X3", Friday was "Cars" and "The DaVinci Code."
X3= B+
Special FX are pretty great, fight scenes are wicked, new characters kick ass.
However, I felt like they were trying to cram so much in that full development of all the characters suffered and the storyline was a bit confusing. Dan and I spent a lot of time going, "Ok, so, who is this person again, what happened to what's their face, ... what's going on...exactly?. The bit at the end of the credits though...totally makes me want to see an X4.
Cars = A
INCREDIBLE animation, great storyline, well chosen voice talent, a funny and absolutely fantastic movie. It is very unique and truly spectacular. It actually makes you see NASCAR as an exciting, challenging, and wonderful sport while still making some jokes about the "trailer park tuesday" aura NASCAR has.
NASCAR bit aside, it's a funny movie that makes you want to go on a long road trip, drive very fast, or at least talk to your car after you leave the theater.
Pixar is still the shit, and I just pray Disney lets Pixar do its own thing as opposed to seriously fucking up the good run Pixar's got going.
(Oh, and the short film "One Man Band," which plays before the movie is excellent.)
My only qualm is probably that since there really is no villan, our "hero" is never in any real danger (or as real as danger can get in an animated movie). Instead of our hero defeating some sort of evil, we follow the lead car (voiced by Owen Wilson) as he grows and learns and changes. (There IS the stock car that's a total jerk-wad asshole but he's not all that threatening and I wouldn't classify him as much of a nemesis.)
Maybe that's not it, but it definitely lacked a little something extra. Still, it was a great freaking movie.
The DaVinci Code = C+
I'm totally in agreement with Jon about this one.
The movie was really interesting, but it was overly predictable, there was NO chemistry between Sophie and Langdon, and some moments of the film were so ridiculous they snapped you out of the movie and made you say, "What the fuck?" The plausability of someone being distracted by some birds just as they are about to shoot someone is so thin Myth Busters would have a hay day with it.
I'm a sucker for finding hidden codes and chasing down a treasure (National Treasure anyone?) but Langdon's nearly psychic abilities to crack these complex codes in mere moments was laughable.
The flashbacks aren't all that cool either.
Sir Ian Mckellen on the other hand was the sole saving grace of the movie.
So there's my opinion on the 3 movies I saw this week. Cars is a must see, X3 is pretty good, and DaVinci Code...well, wait until it comes out on video and spend your $6 on Cars instead.
