I started running a couple weeks ago to try to get healthier/lose weight/feel better, and it's been going pretty well. I started with barely able to run a quarter mile without slowing to a walk, so would alternate walking and jogging. Now, even after just this short time, I'm able to start by running well over a mile before I switch to walking. ( Read more... )

Awesome! :-D

Running is so great. It gives you energy for the rest of the day. It helps get rid of nervousness or tension; it helps you focus on work.

Just look out for those knees. Bad knee = no fun at all. For me, sometimes, doing a little weight-lifting gives my leg muscles a little boost and that helps hold my knees together. Or maybe your running stride is not completely straight? Well, I can't really give you any advice other than, just take care of yourself and don't ignore knee pain.

And have fun. :-)

The source of the pain might be that I need new running shoes, of which I have a pair in a box in the bottom of my closet (in addition to not having been trained in a proper gait). The other thing is that the route I have been taking has a lot of long places where the ground slopes down to the right. I slightly altered my path this time to have a good distance on some asphalt which sloped the other way, but after a couple hundred yards, my knees felt a little weird. Maybe the best solution is to run the course in the opposite direction :)

And I think I'll add some weightlifting, too.

Running sucks ... that said, for everything that I hate about it, it really is the best way to keep in shape. Make certain that you stretch out really well. That's the biggest reason why my knee went bad.

I have been taking care to stretch for about 10-15 minutes afterward by keeping each stretch in position for about two minutes. It's really helped me not to be sore, since every other time I've started exercising regularly, I'd hold the stretch until I felt a good burn. Now I hold it until the burn smooths itself away.

And I'll definitely take special care of my knee; that's why there'll be no running for me today, and instead I'm going to ride my bike.

I just have been stretching afterward; I'll take your suggestion and stretch at the beginning, too. I definitely don't want any injuries.
