'25,000 miles to go'
Introduction
____________________________________________________________________________
Taeyeon chewed on the end of her lollipop stick while flipping through the cash she recently received for her delivery job. Counting it skillfully, she stuffed it back into the brown envelope and nodded at her customer. "It's all here. Thanks." Taeyeon waved the pack of money before jumping back into her truck. The old man nodded at Taeyeon as well, bidding the young woman a safe trip home.
The sun did not shine yet and Taeyeon silently prayed it wouldn't for another couple hours. She knew once the summer heat would come out, it would be disgustingly hot and humid in her truck. She hadn't gotten her window fixed yet and she did not want to turn the A/C with the window down. Before leaving, she asked the old man again for directions to a repair shop. Once she received the information, she drove off in a race against the sun.
She managed the convince the owner to open up early to get her car fixed. Paying a little extra, the man guaranteed it would be fixed in an hour tops. Taeyeon decided to walk to a nearby restaurant to eat her early breakfast.
Fiddling around with her phone, she received a text message from an unknown number, asking about an advertisement Taeyeon had put up on the internet long ago.
Not fond of texting, Taeyeon dialed the number and hoped they were awake. A couple rings in, Taeyeon got her answer.
"Yes hello? This is Sunny from the artist engagement company."
"Huh?" said a confused Taeyeon. "Uhm, I received a message from you earlier, I'm Taeyeon, the one who put up the advertisement."
"Ah! Yes! Thanks for calling."
"No problem, so what do you need me to deliver?" Taeyeon was approached by a waiter asking what she wanted. Instead of putting down the phone, she pointed at her choice on the menu.
"It's not really a delivery..it's more of a..driving adventure? You're a driver right?"
After taking a sip of her cool lemonnade, Taeyeon answered. "That's right."
"Can you drive RVs?"
"Is that what you need me to deliver?" Taeyeon heard a sigh of frustation on the other side of the line. She couldn't quite understand the situation. Taeyeon liked simple straightforward conversations.
The woman replied after a short silence. "No it's rather more complicated than that, sigh, can we meet up? It'll be a lot easier to tell you that way. I'm sorry, but I live in L.A."
Taeyeon softly smiled remembering how she could truthfully say she was in the city too. Usually, offers online required her to drive to the client before any exchange was made. "I'm here. But my car is getting fixed right now, I'm sorry, you'll have to come to me."
"Great. Text me your location."
"Your lemonade." The waitress said before placing it down beside Taeyeon. After she left, Taeyeon grabbed a straw before dropping it in her drink. She twirled it around before bringing it to her lips to drink.
Sunny sat in front of her, anxious of her answer. "So..." hinted Sunny.
"...you aren't really serious are you..?" Taeyeon replied.
"I'm very serious." Sunny said taking out her phone. She pressed some buttons and flashed the screen to Taeyeon. Taeyeon saw a glimpse of it before she looked somewhere else. "Look." Sunny repeated. "Look at my bank account. I'm not lying, I will pay you, heck. I could give you a half now." Taeyeon raised her hand up to ask for the bill. She stood up grabbing her envelope she received from her earlier job. Sunny grabbed her wrist, causing the unexcited Taeyeon to send a glare.
"If you accept this job, you'll receive way more than you could ever fit in an envelope. Believe me." Sunny convinced. "Please."
"How could I believe you? This is way good to be true. And it's rather shady. Look, I'm just trying to find honest work. A simple location to deliver. A simple package. I'm that kind of driver. Not...whatever you're asking me to do." She tugged her arm away before walking away. She stopped in her tracks when she found the persistent smaller woman standing in front of her.
"Please, find someone else." Taeyeon begged, tired from her constant ramblings. As much as she believed it was true, she was overly cautious and suspicious of everything - a habit she obtained when she was betrayed in the past.
"There is no one else..please. I'm nothing shady. I swear. Can you sit back down so we can talk about this?"
"There's nothing else to talk about.." frowned Taeyeon. "I just can't believe you're going to hand out $50,000 to drive a woman around the country. What if she's a wanted woman? What if she's into shady business? I'll be honest. I'm interested, but the risks are just too much for me."
"She's nothing like that..she's just an striving artist whom I'm forcing to go around the country for inspiration."
"That doesn't make any sense. You don't need to drive 25,000 miles to find inspiration." Taeyeon fumbled around the restaurant and picked up a salt and pepper shaker. "There's inspiration everywhere. You see this?" She shook the item. "You can find inspiration in this. You can..sigh..I don't know. Try to paint a photo only using salt and pepper. I've never seen it before, she could do that." Sunny opened her mouth to say something when Taeyeon continued on. "You see this?" Taeyeon picked up a half drunken coffee she ordered earlier. "Try painting with coffee. All you guys have to do is look around. Not travel, god. You artist are crazy."
Sunny smiled with only one side showing. She raised her hands up in defeat and acceptance. "Yeah we're a little crazy, but we're just trying to survive. There's nothing much to see in the cities. She needs to go out and empty her mind. Create that, y'know, one-of-a-kind artwork."
"Yeah." scoffed Taeyeon. "Good luck with that."
"Just give me a chance. Please?" Sunny said desperately. "How about when you meet her? I can arrange a meeting right now." Sunny urged on because she had a sixth sense for people. When she saw Taeyeon, she knew this was her driver. It would take a whole bunch of convincing, but she just had a sense Taeyeon was a good and nice person.
When she saw Taeyeon sigh and plop her shoulders down. She knew she won.
"Fine." Taeyeon mumbled. "Fine. You win."
Taeyeon didn't know what to expect. When she saw a beautiful woman walk through the double doors of the restaurant, she expected her to sit someplace else. Perhaps with someone or alone. But when she came closer and closer to the table, her suspicions were raised.
"Uhm." The beautiful woman said. "Are you..?" Taeyeon swung around some keys on her index finger before pressing down on a button. It alarmed the car just parked outside of where she sat in clear view of their window. It was the RV Sunny provided them. The honk alarmed Tiffany and she looked at it expectedly. Then she glanced back at Taeyeon with relief. "My name is Tiffany. You're Taeyeon right? Sunny's cousin?"
Taeyeon was taken back at the relative part. "W-what?"
"Sunny told me you were her cousin and you were willing to take me around the country...I'm glad you accepted. I don't want to be stuck with a complete stranger."
Taeyeon wanted to completely deny the cousin part but she figured it would have been better that she didn't. If Sunny had to lie to convince Tiffany to go, then maybe they weren't so bad and shady afterall.
"Yeah..I'm..Sunny's cousin.." gulped Taeyeon. "Uhm..before we go..are you really serious about the entire thing..?"
Tiffany sighed before placing her purse down to sit. She looked outside, still awkward with Taeyeon's presence. "I really don't know..Of course..I think it'll be fun and actually do me some good..but.." She tapped on the table nervously. "I..I just can't leave L.A. I've lived here all my life. I don't know whats out there. What else exists outside L.A. I'm.." Tiffany's eyes started at Taeyeon's hands before she followed them up to look at Taeyeon in the face. "I'm scared."
In Tiffany's eyes, Taeyeon looked tired and uninterested in what she was saying. But the truth was, in Taeyeon's eyes, she wanted nothing more but to accept this offer. It may seem like a contract with the devil, perhaps because it was too good to be true, but it was too good to be true.
Because in front of her, in Taeyeon's eyes, was an angel.
Taeyeon smirked and twirled the keys around her fingers once again. "Have you eaten yet?"
Tiffany nodded.
"Have you packed up your stuff?"
Tiffany nodded pointing at her suitcase behind her.
"Are you ready to go?"
Tiffany paused, but nodded anyway.
"Then," Taeyeon said standing up. "Let's go."
