Poll Pop or Soda?

I've been wondering about this for a while, and am now finally bored enough to post it. So, you have to vote. Because I said so.

Juice. Or fizzy juice. Although I have been known to call it soda also.

Except I grew up calling it pop, because that's what they call it in Michigan. When I moved to Florida for a year and a half, people teased me so much that I consciously switched over to calling it soda.

Oh, and I had one friend in Florida who was from Tennessee who called everything Coke. Even if she wanted a Mountain Dew. :P

I knew it was common in the midwest to say pop, but I didn't know that about Florida. I'm not sure what most people here (in Washington State) say. I've been trying to pay attention at work, but most people say 'drink.' I myself say soda.

I've heard stories about that. When someone would say they wanted a Coke, you'd have to ask "What kind of coke?"

When I was wee, I used to call it Coke. I hated actual Coke, though, and once I walked into a little store in my mom's hometown in Indiana, and asked for a Coke, and while I was deciding what kind of Coke I wanted, Gertrude, who ran the store, opened a bottle of Coke for me. Feh. I instantly cured myself of that habit. (Oddly, now I prefer Coke.)

In Ohio, where I'm from, it was pop, but I switched to soda when I moved to NYC. I just never liked saying "pop" that much, I guess.

Oh, and in Ireland, it's minerals.

I answered "soda," because it's the one I use most often, but I also sometimes come out with "soda pop."

I call it soda and/or soda-pop as well. Soda more times that any, though. Maybe that is an Northwest thing? I've been trying to listen to what people say to me at work, but most people say 'drink.' They aren't being that helpful.

Pop. Standard rule is: All of the Midwest says 'pop'.

Although I still won't drink the stuff. It's nasty! *shudders*

Ha! Lindsey, you actually did this poll. I love you so. :)

Kantayra-- I, also, do not drink the stuff (actually, no carbonated beverages in general).

I call it "pop," by the way. Michigander represent! Though you could've added "Coke" to the list-- since that covers Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Caffiene-Free Coke, etc.

*head desk* I was going to put Coke in there, and I forgot to. Because I suck. A lot of people at work do call it Coke. Whatever.

I'm a horrible evil person and I drink soda. Diet Pepsi to be exact. I need the caffeine, like woah. And coffee makes my tummy hurt after a while. *slurps on soda* I drink it through a straw, because it is fun.

Hee! Pop. It is so fun to say. I always say soda... or soda-pop. Because it is just fun that way.

SODA-POP! :P

I think there is a very regional component to whichever term you use. Soda seems to be the noun of choice in the East, with small regional enclave exceptions. My daughter's girlfriend is from Oil City in western Pa. and she calls is "pawp", which generally makes me giggle, as every one else I know calls it soda.

Then again, there's the hoagie/sub thing, and when I was in Mass. a few years ago, my sister ordered a chocolate milkshake, and she got foamy chocolate milk, that had been shaken by hand. She finally figured out that what we call a milkshake was known as a "cabinent" there, and elsewhere I've heard it called a frappe. Who knew?

Soda does tend to be an Eastern way of saying it, I suppose, but I'm from Washington State, born and raised, and I've always said soda. It is an interesting thing, for sure.
