Summer Movie & Book Lists

Jun 16, 2009 23:55

Today I went downtown with a friend and we scoured Barnes & Noble for stuff to read and compiled rough versions of summer reading lists. Then we got distracted and came up with lists of movies we need to see this summer as well. I typed all of mine up just now and decided to post them here for you guys to see. If you have any other suggestions, ( Read more... )

After having looked at your reading list, I was going to recommend Garp, but then I read on and found it in your recs :) Have you seen the film version? I watched it last weekend and loved it. Robin Williams is the perfect Garp.

As for the Austen novel you want to read: I'd suggest either Pride & Prejudice or Sense & Sensibility.

I still haven't seen the movie version of Garp; I've heard mixed things about it though. Some people have really liked it and others said they thought it was terrible. I do love Robin Williams though so one of these days I want to get around to seeing it.

And by the way, I love that icon! :D

Portnoise Complaint - Roth
*Portnoy's Complaint

You will love it. Roth is totally outrageous.

"Fear and Loathing" is by Hunter S. Thompson, and it's also totally outrageous.

"Captain Blood" is by Sabatini. I forget his first name. It's some suave Spanish name -- Rico or something.

"The Stand" as in Stephen King or is there some other "The Stand" that I don't know about?

I appreciate your reading list. I endorse Amazon.com, libraries, and MEEE as cheap book sources. I own 85% of that list, and I'd be happy to lend any/all to you for extended periods of time. :) The Clayton library > all other libraries in the Contra Costa County. It's amazing. But the Pleasant Hill library tends to have old, rare books -- ones you think must surely be out of print.

Book/movie lists = love.

Thanks. :P I was too lazy to look up authors and proper spelling last night.

I may or may not bother you for various books over the course of this summer. I have Fear & Loathing, The Stand, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest here at home so I'll probably start with those, but yeah.

And yes! I love the Clayton Library. That's the only one I ever go to.

Yeah, "The Stand" by Stephen King. My dad's been trying to get me to read it for eons, I figure I'll do it this summer finally.

BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID!!!
That's a good movie.

The pianist is also extremely good.
& Dead Poet's, I guess. Haha. Yeah.

The Graduate. Just know you'll be amused. =]

Oh! You know this already but Vonnegut is wonderful.

I also personally enjoyed King Lear, but I'm pretty sure the rest of my english group didn't, but it's really good! & Macbeth is just fantastic.

You'll have an enjoyable summer with that list.

Unfortunately I picked it up at B&N the other day, read the first chapter, and eventhough I know it's going to be weird and gross, find myself needing to finish it now. The writing is just so pretty. :3

Your reading list is pretty much what's on my giant reading list, though I've read quite a few of the ones of your list. YOU WILL LOVE ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST. AND YOU MUST WATCH THE MOVIE AFTERWARD.

Also: add MY GIRL FRIDAY to the movie list. Howard Hawks + Cary Grant + insanely fast cross-talk + journalism. I desperately want to watch it.

Haha I need to see pretty much all of those movies too. Let me know when you're going to watch some and let's make it a party. :P

Oh yes! That's one of the ones I wanted to remember to write down, thanks Val!

Yeah, I'm trying to use this summer to get caught up on all the books I should have read eons ago. Like Vonnegut. How fail am I for never having gotten around to Vonnegut?
