it might be that claire's whole thing is actually just a made-up comfort zone for himself to not feel sick about killing people. well, that's the kind of thing i like to imagine anyway..... i don't know if you remember but that's also what i imagined the time i told you "i'd want a fic where ladd and claire are (living together and) talking about stuff now and then and kind of accidentally hit topics that makes them understand things about each other / themselves", like claire would say something and ladd realises "oh, so he's forcing himself to believe this or that in order to be strong".
essentially the same as a story where two religious people would discuss stuff and more and more realise why they both feel a need to believe in some fantasy in order not to be scared of death/pain/failure/etc and to justify their own actions ( ... )
