Heylo!

Just had to post my immediate opinion of part one of the new ITV adaption of Emily Bronte's 'Wuthering Heights', for two reasons. 1. Because I am an English student. And I studied Wuthering Heights a year ago and got full marks for the paper. 2. BURN IS IN IT XD (And I love Burn. Who doesn't?)

Anyways...am I impressed, you probably want to ( Read more... )

I've never had any huge love for Wuthering Heights (I think it's great, but I don't adore it with the passion I have for, say, Tale of Two Cities, but it's good) so from that perspective I really enjoyed it. Burn was OBVIOUSLY wonderful and the girl playing Cathy was great ( ... )

Yeah I'm not a HUGE WH fan either, but I do think it's worth reading!

Yes I too am not fond of the Laurence Olivier romantic hero thing, but I've not liked ANY version of Heatchcliff I've ever seen so maybe I'm just hard to please? But I can definately understand how Tom Hardy made Heathcliff unlikeable. Maybe he'll grow on me?

Yes Lockwood IS annoying, but I watched it with my parents, who far from literary geniuses, are pretty smart and were a tad confused, and myabe I (wrongly?) thought Lockwood would helpt that. I think Linton is adorable, but a huge wuss!

LOL! Me too, it's been stuck in my head all evening now...

(Oh and thank you for commenting! I've been desperate to have a proper intellectual conversation for weeks, as I've been off school for over 2 months now and my brain is mush!)

I think Heathcliff is a spectacularly hard role to cast/play because so many people have such different ideas of what he should be. (Mind you, the same could be said for Mr Rochester - I loathed and detested Toby Stephens in the latest Jane Eyre adaptation while everyone else seemed to love him.)

Maybe he would have helped? I was watching it with my sister's boyfriend who'd never read the book and he had no clue what was going on for at least twenty minutes. But as someone who knew what was happening and never liked him, I did not miss him!

And you're very welcome - I've also really missed intellectual conversation! I've been off school for a YEAR and am completely going to fail university. I have Grave Doubts as to whether I will remember how to write an essay! So I am seizing all intellectual discussion wherever possible! Can we schedule another one for tonight? :D

I think you're right about Heathcliff, very difficult to cast. (And I must say I haven't seen that Jane Eyre adaption, and haven't read the book for many moons so can't really compare very well!)

Yeah I think maybe you're right about Lockwood, it may have been to stop and start, and maybe felt more forced? Also he is very annoying...

Wow, a year! I thought 2 months and a half was bad enough! I'm sure it'll all come back to you, writing essays is like riding a bike! What are you going to study?

I haven't seen the second part yet, as I was out this evening, but I will either write a post about it, or PM you? (whatever you prefer) So then we can talk about how we loved/hated/didn't mind it!

Think I'm going to hold off on watching this until I've finished the book, especially if it's not all that true to the original. Admittedly, by the time I do that the 2010 film'll probably be out as well.

I'd definately finish the book first, just so that you can form your own Heathcliff and Cathy (etc...) in your head, without them looking like Tom Hardy/Charlotte Riley etc...

It is a hard book to get through I think, because of the jumping timelines, and I suppose the sheer volume of it, but I think worth it, because even though it's not my favourite book ever, lots of people know it, and there are TONNES of adaptions, and it's nice to compare and things :)

Tom hardy as Heathcliff-Excellent. jackie62 September 5 2009, 13:43:47 UTC
I applaud Peter Bowker and all others concerned regarding this adaptation-it was wonderful!
I have been waiting for this adaptation for years, a visual masterpiece that tells the story in all it's brutality and stark reality.
Tom Hardy-well, what can I say? His Heathcliff was sublime in my opinion, exactly how I imagined him to be: brutal, brooding, intense, twisted, obsessive and devastatingly handsome. For me, he stood out; his persona as Heathcliff has still not left my mind and I find myself thinking about his character days later after watching it. I have since watched more of Tom Hardy's work and I have to say that he is a star in the making. He has a raw talent that comes along once in a while that makes the industry sit up, listen and watch. Check out his other works, especially Stuart, A Life Backwards (based on a true story), it will be forever ingrained in your soul.
