Finding Creativity in a Corporate World

Nov 13, 2012 18:58

I recently experienced something rather horrid. I almost lost track of who I was and thus my creativity. Creativity is not needed in the corporate world, nor is it really needed in teaching. Teaching is based on fact and skill and effective communication, much like the office job I work.

How does one keep the balance without going crazy?

One way is to broaden your definition of "creativity." Teaching should ABSOLUTELY be creative. That's how you get "effective communication" to work when every student you'll ever have learns differently and interacts with you differently. And of course, whatever skill you're teaching will very likely have a creative element to it. If we assume singing, try doing something like writing new vocal exercises that are technically worthwhile but also interesting and fun to sing. Or teach your students (in whatever art form) how to be originally creative themselves, and not just parrot back what you teach them ( ... )

Yeah. :) :)

At least for me feeling as though I have done something creative means going to a solo dance at least 1-2 times a week, doing something with my hands 1-2 times a week and singing every day. This is a lot to ask when you work 50 hours a week. :/ Can't wait to teach full time and shake this silly office job.
