Actually, you're right- that is entirely what the case was. When I asked my mom why no one had seen it or rolled their eyes or chuckled or anything, she explained it to the effect of "I was only on my first cup of coffee. Don't take seriously anything I say or do at that time in the morning. And Jim [stepdad] mentioned to me in private that it reminded him of Richard Dreyfuss in Close Encounters. He contemplated whether we'll be seeing mashed potato mountains next."

I can't do anything meaningful before coffee. I can't even shave- I've been shaving daily for six years. If I haven't had coffee, my goatee is crooked. It's ridiculous.

See sir, this is the classic case of the half-empty vs. half-full glass. One one hand, we have a young man stumbling through life without his coffee hit and musing over his stylistic deviations. On the other, a vocational plan B: if the whole respectable academia thing doesn't pan out, you could turn turn the "deviation" into "innovation" and become a raging, caffeine-tortured hair technician. Such a natural choice, I bet you're kicking yourself for not thinking of it already, eh?

(Oh geez, is it bad that I just felt an overwhelming urge to parenthesize "men... de" by "on one hand... on the other"?)
