i haven't been reading manga lately because of what i feel is lack of originality in relation to cost...but if you're into the really overly romantic stuff you should look for fushigi yugi

also try the sandman comics, which are not manga, but very very very well done and interesting

for just regular books you should look at
johnny got his gun, dalton trumbo--> heavy, very anti war, and brilliant (i thought)
on the road, jack kerouac--> will make you want to travel, beautiful writing

-much love

Heh. FullMetal Alchemist (what she read, and what the above quote is from, if you didn't catch it) isn't too romantic. Sandman is awesome, though. Props for that : ).

Watch blanket statements. They come back to haunt you. You're lucky this is just entertainment.

Trigun...haven't actually read the Manga, but the anime's my favorite by far. The symbolism is intense. I don't think there's a single pen-stroke in there without a thematic motive. Interferes with the story a little toward the end, but so cool nonetheless.
Pet Shop of Horrors. So cool. Derek let me borrow that yesterday, first I'd heard of it.
Saiyuki is popular among your grade. Mostly adorable, somehow, even with the violence and stuff.
