~Character Information~
Character Name: David Lynch / Diamond Dave
Age: 19
Appearance:
PB:
Brendan Fehr David is a bit on the taller side standing at 5’8’’. He’s of average build, though leans a bit on the stockier side. As he’s still young, there’s a bit of baby fat that still clings to him and gives him a boyish look in the face, despite the stubble he usually has clinging to his chin. His eyes are a warm brown, bright and lively, reflecting his interest in the things around him. It’s rare not to see him smile. David’s hair is a brown-blond, slightly curly, usually messy.
The clothing that he wears is typical of the time period in his world -- slacks (usually stained with mud at the bottom), scuffed shoes that had once been nice, rumpled dress shirt, vest and suspenders. He also has a hand woven bracelet that he wears on his left wrist, usually tucked beneath the cuff of his shirt. It was a gift from his close friend Elisa from before he and her sisters ran off to make their fortune. It’s imbued with a very low-grade luck charm.
World Information:
The world of Lumiere is heavily magic based and follows along in the footsteps of Victorian steampunk. The main people of the world are called Weavers, so named for the deity of one of Lumiere’s oldest religions (though the name does vary from culture to culture, the meaning is the same -- you have the ability to d magic). The majority of citizens on Lumiere have the ability to do magic, ranging on a tier system. First Tier means you can do basic magic, but lack the potential to go further, and is what most Weavers are at with variations through Second and Third. Seventh Tier is the highest that you can achieve, meaning you can do all sorts of crazy awesome magic.
There are those that can’t do magic, the Humans. Depending on the society and culture, they have varying success in their lives, but for the most part, they’re considered sub-living, freaks, and things that shouldn’t generally exist. In the Empire of Eridian, where Dave was born, tension between Weaver and Human is high, with the Weavers not too long ago trying Humans in trials much like our own With Hunts. Later, down Dave’s timeline, a full on war breaks out, but as it is, Humans are mostly banned from the cities.
In the Eridian Empire, magical learning is of the utmost importance. One of its main cities, Haven, is said to be the spot to go to hone your skills, housing such things as the University of Magic and the Witches Guild as well as smaller house factions. For most Weavers in the Empire, they receive magical training up until they’re thirteen, mostly in the areas that their expertise lies, and then are shipped off for apprenticeships before becoming adults at sixteen.
A Weaver’s life span is relatively short, most being lucky if they make it to fifty. The main cause of death is a general fizzling out of life, usually manifesting as a heart attack. For a Weaver, magic is their life force and their main point of power is their heart. There are even tales and a macabre group called the Samovars that say if you take the beating heart out of a Weaver and bleed it, you can gain all of their magical power and their life force. As both of these things are so heavily connected, the more magic that is used by the Weaver, the shorter they cut their life, though the direct correlation between cause of death and this is relatively unknown, as that is how life has always been.
Science is taken over by magic, the former being something only used by Humans to compensate for lack of abilities. Creatures of myth, such as dragons, trolls, etc, are seen constantly through the countryside and there is no shortage of adventure or discovery in the world of Lumiere.
Personal History:
Diamond Dave started out as David Lynch, the son of travelling circus folk. He lived a nomadic lifestyle for much of his childhood and enjoyed it for the most part. As he got older, he got to become a part of the circus stylings of his parents and ‘family,’ but as he grew and the routine became the same, David started to become restless.
Each year, the family would visit different cities and villages the same day each year, and in one of the farming towns he met the triplets Elisa, Elizabeth, and Eleanor. David and Elisa especially became close and they all looked forward to when the circus would come back so that they could see each other again.
David took after his parents in their magic. He was very skilled with illusions, able to create elaborate, believable scenes that often surpassed those of his parents’.
When he turned thirteen, it was time for him to pick a skill and stick with it. Of course, his mother and father had picked for him, saying that he would spend his time learning more of the family trade and would eventually take over the business. David, however, had other plans. When they arrived again in the village of his friends, they discussed their futures. The three girls were also not content to spend the rest of their lives in a farming community, so, that night, the four of them snuck off to strike their fortune in Haven.
The girls found easily a trade that they wanted to learn, but David was having far more trouble. Most illusionists used their ability for entertainment purposes, but David had wanted out of that. There was no challenge in it, nothing to test his abilities.
That was until a famed thief hit the town and David was struck by the romantic idea of it -- steal things, great adventure, lots of challenge. What could be better?
He started small and it was never for any personal gain. Whatever was taken was eventually returned, until he started more Robin Hood stylings as he got older. He gained fame across Eridian and eventually took up the moniker of Diamond Dave after one particularly daring heist.
At nineteen, he still goes strong, now targeting one of the most coveted prizes in all of Eridian: the Empress’ diadem.
Personality:
David, on the whole, can be counted as a goober. He’s always got a smile on his face, a pleasant word for anyone passing, and a joke in his arsenal that he’s ready to fire off at a moment’s notice. It seems like he doesn’t take life seriously when, all he wants to do, is have fun. What’s the point of living if you’re not enjoying it?
There always seems to be a twinkle in his eyes, something mischievous and calculating. It’s never malicious, but he’s always trying to learn, watching people, his surroundings, and waiting for the next big thing. Opportunity only strikes every so often and David wants to be there to swoop in and snatch it away.
Reputation is everything to David. When he exits the world, he wants it to be a bang and he wants everyone to remember his that totally awesome thief that stuck it to the man, never hurt anyone, and was just an all-around cool guy. As such, when he goes out thieving, he makes sure that if the person he steals something from really doesn’t need that item, it makes its way back to someone that does. A national treasure usually ends up back at a museum’s doorstep a week or so later when he’s done lording over his prize. For David, it’s not the item that’s the important part, it’s the adventure and challenging himself that is.
Because of this, David is often restless. The man has trouble sitting still and has to be doing something with himself, whether it’s pacing when nervous, drumming a tune with his fingers when bored, or just gesticulating wildly while talking, his body is almost in as much action as his words.
David does have trouble committing himself to just one thing. While his thievery is easy to stick with, it’s because it’s a constantly changing thing and each new venture is a surprise in and of itself. Mundane things don’t hold much interest and, again, he becomes restless far too easily.
Strengths:
Magic| Illusions : David borders Sixth Tier magic with his illusions. He can make them so believable that you can feel the touch of a person he’s created, the sound of their voice, the rustle of fabric. He can create entire, believable worlds at the flick of his wrist.
Lockpicking : This one was trial and error for David, but as he went along, he got a lot better at it. Definitely a useful skill for a thief to have.
Athletics : Circus life definitely had its perks, as does all of the running around that David now does. It’s probably a good thing, as he often does crazy stunts to get the job done.
Dancing : Not so much a strength, as one that’s in his head. David believes he’s a fabulous dancer and tries to get his triplet friends to let him join their troupe from time to time. When you see him in action, you can understand why they politely decline his god-like skill.
Weaknesses:
Pretty Girls : Oh hey pretty lady, how you doing? David definitely has a thing for lovely ladies. He’ll jump through hoops for them and do his best to woo, but once the courtship is over, don’t expect him to stick around.
Commitment Issues : If things don't catch David's eye or they cease to hold any awe or challenge for him, he'll drop it like a sack of hot potatoes. This leaves a lot of his more mundane projects half-finished and forgotten.
Challenges : If it’s difficult, David is going to try to beat it into the ground and lord over it triumphantly. This has almost become his downfall when the Empire and others have set up traps and fake rumours to lure him in.
Childishness : Due partly to his upbringing, David has a hard time taking things seriously. Life is just one big game to him. He often uses this as a means to deflect the seriousness of a situation as well, which can sometimes be off-putting.
Circus / Past Life : Not so much a weakness as a strong dislike. Bringing up his friends is fine, but he will rarely talk of his parents or upbringing. If pressed, David will become moody and snappish until the topic has changed. Though he wanted something different for himself, he has mixed feelings about leaving, both missing his parents and a joy for his new found freedom.
Magic | Illusions : Though powerful in his skills as a Weaver, he still has to make his illusions believable or else they can be seen through. All five senses must be accounted for and if something is 'off' in even the slightest way and is seen through, then the whole thing can be shattered.
