last opera of the season and it was a Lulu

I spent a weekend with Berg and Japanese comic books (plus the usual sleeping and eating).

I have some familiarity with Alban Berg's music, so I was not too surprise with his opera Lulu (did Schoenberg completed the orchestration after Berg's death?). I found that the music complemented the plot, but I gather that most attendees felt otherwise. Even with lewd suggestions and banker jokes, a significant fraction of the audience left before the final act and most of those who remained voiced unfavorable comments. Personally, I wish that this production had included the silent film that was included in other performances.
At the Center of Book Arts I stopped by to see the small exhibit on the first decade of the manga Garo (through to the 26th of June). Many notable comic artists got their start in Garo and I enjoyed seeing their early work as well as some of the more experimental strips. I do concede that this exhibit will probably have limited appeal.
The Japan Society of New York has an exhibit of the prints by Kuniyoshi (Graphic Heroes, Magic Monsters through to the 13th of June). Because of the detailed descriptions of the prints, I spent much longer oggling the prints than I had originally planned. I do recommend this show to those interested in Japanese art. I also saw a notice that tickets had sold out to movie RoboGeisha; while I would not have been able to stay for the movie, I now curious abut this cinematic work.
