I thought I was under an illusion as well. But the thing is, the way he diesd was simply a case of bad luck. From what I've read, a sting ray's...well, sting, is supposed to be very very very painful, even poisonous, but fatalities are very rare. It simply just went through Steve's heart.

That makes it the more heartbreaking.
