My friend in the US, she just moved there a few days ago, was telling me that some kid said; "Ching chang chong!" to her.

Friend: Ching chang chong!
Me: Heyy, there! Haven't spoken to you in ages! How are you? And what on earth is "ching chang chong"?
Friend: Some random kid came up to me, said it and ran away laughing.
Me: What? Why? It doesn't ( Read more... )

Have you two never heard of google? ::wink:: Could have looked it up as like everything, it's there -- and I must admit it made me laugh when I read your subject title because we used to say this when I was at school decades and decades ago... surprised it's not been replaced by something else by now.

Hard to know if it was racist or something done without really thinking it through, that it might cause offense to someone of that culture even though you find it funny.
Some parts of America are really racist still - you can't base what you think you know on the TV! A lot of hatred and fear over black people still exists!
And I think racism is becoming worse due to political correctness gone mad, it's breeding a lot of resentment!
Luckily for you I've not been up long and am only on my first cup of coffee, or I might have gone on a bit of a rant... ::grin::

Hahahaha, it didn't seem like something legitimate. I mean, well it's just something made up, but it was weird - the notion of googling something like 'ching chang chong'. o.o Doesn't even exist as a phrase in Chinese ( ... )

OMG. That's absolutely insane! We have Ramadhan here too (well, duh, Muslim country) but everyone goes along with their own things and of course, we respect them by not taunting them with food or teasing them with drinking in front of them but whoever wants to swim will go ahead and swim and our Muslim friends aren't bothered by it - it's crazy to change how everything works just for people of one culture/religion! I never thought they had such crazy things going on. And Christmas banners! That's even crazier. Everyone wishes everyone Merry Christmas regardless of whether they celebrate it or not; and everyone wishes us Happy Chinese New Year whether they celebrate it or not. O.o And decorations for every festive occasion goes up in malls etc; Muslims themselves find the decorations pretty ( ... )
