They could of gone anywhere in the universe, all they needed to do was set the coordinates into the ships computer and they'd be there. Instead, they found themselves in the pit of engineering, where no body ventured, carrying enough food to feed a family of four (it was Jim afterall) and a couple of blankets. Later on, after they'd made themselves home laying in each others arms Jim turned to Bones "You're right Bones, we could have taken a roadtrip anywhere, but anywhere wouldn't be the same without each other."

Leonard never thought he'd say it, but it felt strange being back on Earth after months in space. He had wanted to catch up on some work during their shore leave, but Jim had asked him to go on a road trip and the idea of saying no had never crossed his mind. After the other man's latest foolhardy attempt to get himself killed during an away mission, Leonard knew there was no other place he could be.

The air was sticky, almost viscous, with humidity, and the sun pounded down like it had somewhere to be and Terra was obstructing traffic and making it late, goddamn. They'd struck out across the field, leaving the hovercar on the side of the road, a hopelessly crumpled pile of maps collaged across the dashboard, and the radio turned off (thankfully silencing Jim's infernal rap music) because who knew when they'd get to an engine recharge station? Jim was laughing as he dragged Leonard through the long grass, and Leonard couldn't help mentally sorting through the contents of his pockets for the antihistamine hypo, because grass, Jim, but then Jim was abruptly halting and twisting around to grab Leonard's face and plant a brief kiss on his lips before pulling back and grinning like the devil, and suddenly none of it (the being lost, the heat, the allergies) mattered because they were "having an adventure, Bones," and Jim was sweaty and gritty and all his "for as long as you'll have me" and Leonard thought: forever.

"Hold still," Leonard barked as he ignored the impish smirk upon Jim's face, patching up the captain's latest injury from the impromptu rock climbing excursion that he simply had to indulge himself in, despite the doctor's (secretly amused) protests. Leonard sighed as he glanced over at the near-ancient vehicle Jim had chosen for their road trip, and beyond it, the majestic canvas of the distant sky was painted with the glow of a setting sun, and it made Jim's eyes shimmer as they faced each other.

"Only you could drag me out here," Leonard said in a whisper, and before the doctor could finish his work, Jim's lips were upon him, his arms were around him, and their shadows intermingled on the desert floor.

Near the end of their five year mission they decide to retrace the steps that led them to each other in the hopes that it will provide some closure. Jim starts off in Iowa among the cornfields and fondly remembers every bar he had visited, while Bones travels from Peach Tree to his alma mater and then goes to check on Jocelyn and Jo.

They arrive at the shipyard together after what feels like an entire lifetime, embracing and saying that they'll never part, ignoring the fact that someday they'll have to.
