I'm a pretty liberal guy in comparison to most of the US. I tend to take the devil's advocate position to the extreme a little too often but I vote solidly democratic (like my parents) and take out my recyclables once a week

I've screwed up once or twice on moderately complicated things that I didn't fully understand,, and it wasn't that bad. All that happened was that they sent me a letter that explained what they thought I should be paying, plus how much interest I owed them. (It wasn't the clearest letter, though.) So I figured out what happened, and that they actually owed me money, so I sent them a response with my new figures, and after another round of back and forth, they sent me a check (without interest, of course).

You should try doing your taxes by paper. It makes the process less opaque since you crunch all the math yourself.
