Dear news agencies,

I don't give 2 schnitzels about California. The southern half is not suited to human habitation, so what does LA do? Import enough water, power and other resources to support it's bloated population and wasteful "image maintenance", the population not concerning themselves that the amount of waste in just the transportaion of such resources alone ( Read more... )

That's why the national news covers it. Like it or not, all of those resource wasters in CA wield more economic power than most nations. If they want to destroy the environment, they can, so we damn well better hear about it first. As for why these people bother to live in a wasteland? 1. Lots of other people are doing the same thing. 2. That particular wasteland has incredibly human-friendly weather. A very narrow range of temperature, generally warm, plus no rain -- horrible for plants but makes for a nice day at the beach.

Plus, they seem to be setting a standard for race relations that the rest of the nation is following along with. CA is a gateway for a lot of new immigrants, legal and otherwise, so it's worth paying attention to. My $0.02.

You do realize where Rodney King had his brush with fame, right? And the riots that occured after the verdict?

The weather is human friendly in the short-term, as long as you bring some resources with you. (Great for vacations.) Long-term, no rain is a BAD thing. No thriving plants = no natural CO2 absorbtion. Overpopulation is a problem in other places too, and it isn't nice to be in those areas either. It leads to massive scale polution like the 'asian brown cloud' that's appearing on satelite images of SE asia.

Look, I know it's an attractive place for people to live, but for crying out loud, consider the broader consequences of your actions and decisions. Don't move to a situation like that and then act like the environment is your #1 concern. It's blatently obvious that you haven't reflected upon the effects your lifestyle has on the rest of the planet.
