What are you guys going to do about his smoke detector?

My mother is acting superintendent of our building, so she's going to have to speak to the landlord in the morning about it. Aside from that, we're pretty sure things will be okay for the night because we made sure he was well awake, the place was aired out VERY good, and everything was all shut off...

Both of my folks are going to be awake for a while yet, though... so if there are any other problems, they'll get dealt with pronto.

I just really hope the landlord doesn't handwave the incident or something, because this has happened twice now. That's 2 of 4 apartment renters being responsible for nearly causing a serious fire.

And... there was a massive fire down the street from us just a couple weeks ago. Burned out the whole kitchen to the point it needs remodeling.

I hate this area...

I should add that to look at, the area itself is nice. One wouldn't expect it to be occupied by so many idiotic people. :|a

It worries me that you're living above a guy who a) has a non-working smoke detector and b) is stupid enough to cook while drunk then fall asleep on it etc. Because if a fire breaks out well, it'll work its way UP.

I really hope something is done about that. That shit is not on. Also, what you did was kind of amazing you know. JUST GOD BE CAREFUL PLEASE

/agrees with hoshi3 on the water-dumping btw

Actually, above TWO guys that have done this. Our apartment is a triplex, and the basement apartments are small and split into two different apartments instead of one, like ours, which is the whole "main" floor. (Not as big as it sounds, but it's decent ( ... )

So you zoomed in through the window and saved flew over to the stove and heroically shifted his burnt food from the hot surface! WHOOSH! o/ And then you struck a super-hero pose with your ironic shirt and there was wind in your hair and some action lines and and it was epic.

Yeah...I can picture it now 9^9

The shirt was ironic, it was. I am still rather amused by it.

I did no flying, though. :( And struck no pose. Except I crossed my arms like I was super irritated! That's... something. Right? XD

Not much for wind except that from the fans...

Why aren't you online?! /whines

So there was no dramatic heroic music? :C

...When we got back into the apartment Bad Romance came on on the radio. Which reminded me of the crispy burnt dude in Gaga's video. XD

More irony ftw?

I was about to say, this story sounds oddly familiar :|

I don't know about anywhere else, but having a non-functional smoke detector and not attempting to fix it or inform the landlord about it is really really illegal and punishable by a heavy fine here. At the very least, the landlord should fine him for it.

Well, we don't know if he knew it wasn't working until last night. That's the annoying thing about detectors... and really, the landlord is as much at fault. Those two basement apartments are really not set up properly. They're like... holes in the wall.

/flails arms

The guy said most of his wall plugs don't work... and I know our landlord sucks because we've got house issues too that the bastard won't fix! 7_7

IDEK... I want to move. XD So badly. Before it happens a third time... because like, wtf if we're not here next time to save the day or something?!

Oh, excellent, a shitty landlord. -_- I mean these potential fires can't quite be blamed on him unless he's been informed of the failing smoke detectors and did nothing about them... At this point, might it be possible to alert a local consumer board or something like that? Landlords are responsible for maintaining a safe building, and if they're not THEY can face fines.

Sort of relevant: did I ever tell you about the time an old apartment caught on fire because of the shitty wiring job my landlord had done? >_> fun times.

I don't know if he's just scraping by, you know? Things can be BARELY legal, after all. It's more my mother's job to deal with it at this point, anyway, so... since she's afraid of fires due to having a bad fire take place in her house when she was a kid, well, I'm sure she'll make sure things get dealt with. Hopefully.

Or find us a new place to live that isn't surrounded by drunks prone to alcoholic stupidity.

And seriously? I HATE LANDLORDS. I'm glad you were okay, though. :S

Alsoalso... on the fines bit... chances are the tenant from last night will get fined, but I don't know. Like I said, our landlord... he is an asshole. But he also doesn't like trouble. So it could go either way. D:
