Chapter 8

“I like you a lot. I’ve liked you ever since I met you. I want to be with you always-just give me one chance.”

A hesitation.

“No.”

Ueda’s heart sank as he looked at Ryo who seemed unable to be persuaded.

“Why not?”

“Because-I hate you.”

“You hate me?” Ueda gasped, sounding like he could cry.

“Yes, I hate you. I hate you more than-”

“WAKE UP OR I’LL KICK YOUR ASS!”

Ueda’s eyes opened instantly and he could see Ryo looking back at him, angry and annoyed, as usual. Ueda turned his head and looked at the alarm clock. He’d overslept by about 20 minutes and was nearly late for his first class.

“OH GAWD! I’M GONNA BE LATE!” he cried, jumping out of his bed and running over to his closet to get his uniform ready.

Apparently, the exchange he had had was all a dream, an all-too real one at that. It had been a few weeks since the Valentine’s incident, but it was as if the incident had never happened. Ryo was his usual grumpy self and Ueda was still finding it difficult to keep a relationship with Yamapi while still remaining in love with his roommate.

One thing that had been on Ueda’s mind recently was the fact that the new school year was starting. He was starting his 2nd year at St. Sebastian’s, and he felt unprepared for the change. It wasn’t like he would be split up from Ryo; roommates were somewhat permanent throughout the entire enrollment at St. Sebastian, with exceptions such as graduation, dropping out, and requests for changing.

Ueda felt some relief at that thought since Ryo obviously wasn’t graduating and he would not be dropping out, thanks to his grandmother’s position at the school. Requesting to change rooms also seemed unlikely in Ueda’s eyes, for no real reason at all.

“What are you doing staring out the window?! We have 5 minutes till homeroom! Put your pants on!”

Ueda looked at Ryo, shaking his head and slipping his uniform slacks over his bare legs. Ryo blushed a little, looking away and turning his attention towards the clock.

“Damn it! I just realized I won’t get to eat breakfast! Thanks a lot! Idiot!”

No matter how berated he was by Ryo, Ueda was glad to have the other boy by his side.

Finally, he was ready and the two made their way to class. Ryo was walking ahead, leaving Ueda to chase after him.

“Hey-wait up,” the older boy panted.

“Hurry up! I don’t want to get yelled at by the teacher! Get those skinny-ass legs moving!”

Ueda ran ahead, far ahead of Ryo, who was shocked at how fast the other boy was moving.

“HEY!” he shouted, while Ueda laughed and continued running.

They arrived late, but the teacher had not yet arrived. The two were put in the same homeroom yet again, something they had learned just the day before.

“You’ve got to be kidding me!” Ryo had groaned when he heard the news.

Ueda just chuckled, shocked as well.

“Why?” was all he could see as he read the paper posted outside the school building, indicating which class each student would be in.

Whatever higher being involved, he or she thought that putting the two roommates would be a good idea. The pair each found a spot next to Yamapi, who surprisingly was in their homeroom as well.

“What took you guys so long?” he said, sounding a bit suspicious.

“Your stupid boyfriend couldn’t wake up on time! If I hadn’t been there, he’d probably still be drooling on his pillow, dreaming about you,” Ryo pouted, crossing in his arms and glaring at Ueda.

Ueda pouted as well and looked at Yamapi, hoping for some sympathy.

“I couldn’t sleep last night. I didn’t think all the pre-semester partying would get to me,” he joked.

The so-called “partying” Ueda was referring to was merely a small get-together with him and his friends in the room he shared with Ryo. There was a game of truth and dare that involved nothing more than a small glimpse into the love lives of some of their friends.

Toma apparently hadn’t been kissed till the month before school had first started; Koki had never had a girlfriend; Maru was a commitment-phobe with several girlfriends in his past. Ueda was disappointed when the most he had learned about Ryo was that he once took some money from his mom’s purse and bought some candy, all without permission. Sadly, there were no real juicy details about his roommate revealed that night.

“You two each have your own problems with waking up on time-so don’t go blaming Tat-chan, Ryo,” Yamapi defended.

One notable detail about the previous night was that it was the first time that Ryo and Yamapi had really hung out since their fight over Ueda about a month or so before. Yamapi was the one to initiate the peace offering, thanks to an eager Ueda and an annoyed Toma. It ended up working out in the end since the two were not only talking but also joking as they had before the big fight that had threatened their friendship.

“Where’s the frickin’ teacher?” Ryo complained, looking around and moving around in his desk.

Finally the door opened and there was a tall, good-looking man who walked in, smiling and holding a bunch of folders in his arms. He had auburn hair and a chiseled jaw; his clothes were pressed and they draped nicely over his sculpted body.

Yamapi stared, open-mouthed as the man walked in; something Ueda had noticed and felt a bit anxious at seeing.

“Hello, boys. My name is Takizawa Hideaki-I will be your new homeroom teacher. Please take care of me.”

“Wow,” Yamapi unknowingly whispered.

Ryo didn’t seem that impressed, on the other hand; he just grimaced at the fact that the teacher had arrived late.

“’Bout time he showed up-he thinks he can be late on the first day of school!”

Ueda ignored Ryo’s ranting and looked at Yamapi, who blushed upon noticing that he was being stared at.

“Ah, sorry-what were you guys talking about?” he shyly responded.

Ueda felt his stomach sink.

“N-Nothing. I didn’t say anything,” Ueda replied, turning his attention to the front of the class and no longer turned towards Yamapi.

“Since you all seem so comfortable, how about we make these your permanent seats? How does that sound?”

Everyone cheered a bit, including Yamapi who sounded the most enthusiastic. Ueda couldn’t quite figure it out but there was something very strange about Yamapi’s behavior.

“Shut up, will ya? It’s not that exciting,” Ryo scoffed at his best friend, also unsure why Yamapi was acting so strange.

“Shut up, Ryo. No one asked you,” Yamapi bit back, causing Ryo to look a bit hurt that he was basically called out by his own friend.

Ueda wanted to say something but wasn’t sure what that would accomplish. He chose to just quietly observe his boyfriend’s changing disposition.

“Now, let’s see-I think I should start by calling roll, right?” the teacher chuckled.

“HERE!” Yamapi screamed, without thinking.

“What the hell? Ryo scoffed.

Ueda just stared at Yamapi, in disbelief as the other boy started to realize his mistake.

The teacher smiled, “Well, thank you-uh-”

“YAMASHITA TOMOHISA, PLEASED TO MEET YOU!” Yamapi stood up, bowed and looked at the teacher with large eyes as everyone stared at him.

“Yamashita-kun, thank you for your enthusiasm but please-wait until I call your name,” the teacher, Takizawa smirked.

Yamapi blushed profusely, feeling embarrassed that he was so loud and obviously out of sync with what the rest of the class was doing.

“S-Sorry,” he managed to whisper before sitting down and burying his head in his hands. Ryo just laughed but Ueda looked a little concerned.

After roll call was over, Ryo made some annoying remarks to his friend.

“So-what the hell was that all about?”

Yamapi turned and glared at Ryo, who backed off a bit. Yamapi then looked at Ueda who seemed a bit depressed for an unknown reason.

“Are you okay?” Yamapi asked.

Ueda looked at him and nodded his head. He wasn’t feeling so great but he decided not to let Yamapi know that. Sighing, he took out his notebook and began doodling in the margins while thinking.

He looked up when a knock on the door was heard. The teacher walked over to the door and gasped a bit.

“Oh my, I completely forgot. Everyone, we have a transfer student joining us this year. Please come in, will you?”

The boy walked in and Ueda’s heart dropped. It was Kame.

“Please introduce yourself to the class.”

“Hi, I’m Kamenashi Kazuya, nice to meet you.”

Whispers could be heard throughout the room, most commenting on Kame’s looks above all else. He seemed to win the favor of a majority of the class.

“Hey, isn’t that your friend?” Ryo turned to ask Ueda.

Ueda nodded his head, while his mouth continued to hang open. He then locked eyes with Kame who seemed just as surprised to see him there.

“TAT-CHAN!” he gasped, without thinking, of course.

Everyone stared at Ueda who was embarrassed beyond belief.

As it turned out, Ueda and Kame never really repaired their relationship after Ueda declared their friendship over not too long ago. It wasn’t because he hadn’t tried or because he forgot; it was extremely difficult for Ueda to get into contact with Kame, who was hard to reach, whether by phone or email.

“So, you know Ueda-kun? Well, you are welcome to pull up a desk next to him. Is that alright, Ueda-kun?” the teacher asked, as if Ueda could say no.

Ueda wanted to shake his head furiously and say no but it wasn’t that easy. He nodded slightly and before he knew it, Kame was sitting behind him, looking eager to talk to him.

“Tat-chan-I didn’t know you’d be in the same class as me. That’s so unexpected-Nishikido-kun-Yamashita-kun, how are you both?”

Ryo smiled and nodded his head while Yamapi seemed too engrossed in what the teacher was saying to respond to Kame’s greeting. Ueda didn’t want to speak but he felt forced to once Kame started tapping him on the shoulder.

“Why haven’t you called, Tat-chan? What’s been up with you lately?”

Ueda snapped.

“I’ve been trying to call you for the past three weeks! You haven’t answered your phone! You don’t respond to my emails! Where the hell have you been?!”

Kame looked hurt, “Tat-chan, I haven’t received a single message from you. Are you sure you’ve been sending it to the right address?”

Ueda felt his head fall forward onto the desk; he lifted it up and looked at Kame, angrily.

“Yes, I have the right address! Why haven’t you responded?”

Kame thought for a bit then his eyes widened as he realized the reason for the lack of communication between the two of them.

“I just remembered! I changed my email address! And my phone number isn’t in service anymore-my dad cut it off. He’s getting me a new phone soon, but until then, no phone calls or emails.”

Ueda didn’t feel so annoyed and started to nod his head.

“Oh, I see. But still-YOU COULDN’T HAVE COME TO VISIT?!”

Everyone looked at Ueda strangely, including the teacher. He then apologized and let Kame continue to explain.

“I just moved-well, my parents are moving. They moved-they moved overseas. My dad got transferred to England and my mom went with him. I’ve been packing as well-so I could move here, to the dorms at St. Sebastian’s. I didn’t find out until two weeks ago; it was all very last minute and we were in a time crunch since my dad HAD to accept the job or else we’d have no income. They thought it would be easier if I just stayed in Japan-and then I suggested Saint Sebastian’s since I knew it would give me a chance to stay in the country and close to you, Tat-chan.”

Ueda sighed.

“Plus, your dad seemed to like the idea as well! He actually put in a good word with the headmistress in order to get me in on such short notice. Usually transfer students have to take an exam and go to an interview but I was lucky-all I had to do was give them my transcripts and they let me in. Of course, my dad is donating some money to the school but-here I am!”

“Wait-my dad?”

“My grandma?” Ryo added.

“I haven’t heard from my parents in a month and you just talked to my dad?!”

“No-my dad talked to your dad. Wow-a whole month? That’s really sad. My parents just called me yesterday-via headmistress’s office phone.”

“My grandma?” Ryo repeated.

“Shut up, Ryo!” Ueda grunted.

Ryo mimicked his voice and turned his attention to Yamapi who was still in a daze.

“What great parents I have,” Ueda ranted, “They leave me in Japan while they go live thousands of miles away in America and they don’t write or call in a month! It’s great to know how they feel about me!”
“Oh, Tat-chan-don’t worry. According to my dad, your parents are just fine.”

Ueda gave Kame a look to show that he was certainly not helping. Kame pouted a bit but continued to try and make Ueda feel better.

“Aw, Tat-chan-you still have me! I mean-that is, if we’re okay with each other-seeing as how I haven’t talked to you in several weeks,” Kame twiddled his thumbs and looked at Ueda every once in a while.

“We’re fine,” he groaned.

“Tat-chan!” Kame squealed as he grabbed Ueda from behind, getting out of his seat to do so.

Ueda choked a bit, drawing the attention, once again from everyone in the classroom.

“Boys?” Takizawa said with a quizzical look on his face.

“Sorry!” Kame chirped, sitting back down and releasing Ueda from his death grip.

Ueda started to breathe normally again and looked at Yamapi who had not moved his eyes from the teacher, even once. Ueda sighed and felt a bit weird at that moment.

During the lunch, he was picking at his food and ignoring the incessant chattering of his friends. Koki and Maru were badgering Kame with questions about his unannounced enrollment in St. Sebastian’s while Ryo and Toma were making fun of Yamapi for the stupid look on his face. For some reason, Ueda felt out of place, even though people gathered around him, he felt like he was not being noticed by the people he wanted to notice him, most.

Unfortunately, he did get someone’s attention; just not whom he wanted to attract.

“U-Ueda-kun?”

Ueda turned around and looked at a very anxious Junno, who seemed unsure of what to do or say in the presence of his juniors.

“Y-Yes?”

Everyone looked at Junno who unexpectedly grabbed Ueda’s arm and dragged him out of the cafeteria. A few minutes and everyone was back to their conversations as if Ueda had never left.

Ueda was thrown against a wall and fenced in by the strong arms of Junno, who looked at him angrily.

“You-”

Ueda’s heart started beating faster.

“Me?”

“You-you know about Jin’s relationship with that-that-Kamenashi, right?”

Ueda stopped and processed what Junno had said.

“Uh-yes?”

“Great. Tell me all about it,” Junno started to smile and stepped back from Ueda as he looked eager for details.

“W-What do you want me to tell you-exactly?” Ueda blinked, curiously.

“Everything! Leave no detail out no matter how filthy-especially if it’s filthy,” Junno guffawed, looking like a complete idiot while doing it.

Ueda rubbed his neck and just replied, “I don’t know much about it-just that they were together for a few months and Kame broke up with Jin-Akanishi-senpai.”

Junno’s smile faded as was replaced by a disappointed frown. He put his hand on the wall and let his head fall forward.

“Jin never told me a thing about it-why can’t he ever just open up to me?! Why can’t he tell me things like I tell him things? Why?!” Junno took Ueda and shook him as he repeated his question.

“I-I don’t know! Please, Taguchi-senpai, let me go.”

Junno let him go and continued lamenting over his dysfunctional relationship with Jin while Ueda attempted to slink away. He stopped when he figured out why Junno was taking it all so hard.

“YOU LIKE AKANISHI-SENPAI!” he gasped.

Junno ran over to him and covered his mouth.

“Are you crazy?! You don’t know who could hear you!” the taller boy shushed Ueda, putting his hand over the other’s mouth as he looked around to make sure there was no one else around.

He confirmed Ueda’s suspicions by nodding his head and blushing like mad. Ueda giggled to himself, for the first time he had learned of another’s crush on someone he knew.

“Do you want me to help you?”

Junno looked at him strangely, but then thought about it and once again, nodded and blushed profusely. Ueda again, giggled and attempted to hand out his best advice.

“If you really like Akanishi-senpai, the key thing to do is-”

“Why are you two talking to each other?” a voice said from behind Ueda.

Ueda jumped and turned to see Jin staring back at him, clueless to what was really going on. Junno turned white and Ueda just began stuttering.

“I-I-you see-”

Jin interrupted his babbling, “Are the rumors true-is Kamenashi really attending St. Sebastian’s now?” he asked with a stupid smile on his face.

Ueda rolled his eyes and nodded his head, “He’s in the cafeteria if you want to see him.”

Jin smirked, rubbing his chin, “I’ll see-but before that, has he said anything about me?”

Ueda sighed and crossed his arms; it was annoying how obvious Jin was being with his concern for Kame.

“No, he hasn’t.”

Jin’s shoulders slumped and he started to look disappointed. Ueda was a bit disgusted, to put as plainly as possible, at the fact that he had somehow gotten himself mixed up in a love triangle that involved his nosy best friend, the best friend’s asshole of an ex-boyfriend, and the best friend of the asshole. It seemed Ueda had a knack for getting himself involved in love triangles, even if he wasn’t the object of affection in anyone’s eyes.

“Kamenashi does still like me, doesn’t he?” Jin asked, looking at Ueda as if no bad blood had ever occurred between them.

“If I knew-I’d tell you. Kame doesn’t like telling me these things,” he half-lied, hoping it would stop any more interrogation from either Jin or Junno.

“Alright, fine-don’t tell me-I’ll figure it out for myself,” Jin grunted, pushing Ueda out of the way so he could make his way into the cafeteria to flirt with Kame.

Jin walked in and was shocked to find Kame and Ryo having a friendly exchange that seemed a bit too friendly; Ueda noticed the same and felt his heart skip a beat.

“What the hell is going on here?!”

“Jin?”

“Oh for the love of-did someone ring a bell that only you could hear? Really, were you invited to interrupt us?” Ryo asked, sounding every bit as sarcastic as he normally did.

“Well-well-well, if isn’t headmistress’s illegitimate grandchild-stress the ‘illegitimate’,” Jin taunted, hoping to impress Kame with his knowledge of such a big word.

“You do realize that you’re implying that my parents are not married and that I was born out of wedlock, right?”

Ueda looked at Jin who seemed a bit embarrassed at his mistake. But then the older boy made up for his mistake with a witty comeback.

“Well, we all know what illegitimate children are also referred to, don’t we-you bastard?”

Ryo gasped, sounding more dramatic than he ever really had been since Ueda had known him.

“Oh dear gawd,” Ryo’s roommate groaned.

Ryo and Jin started bickering when Kame stepped forward and attempted to shut them both up.

“Hey! Now-there’s no need for fighting-it’s just icky to me. I don’t like drama,” he pouted.

Ueda rolled his eyes and muttered under his breath, “Says you, you drama king.”

Kame didn’t hear him and continued, “Why can’t we all just get along? Huh, Jin? Nishikido-kun? Can’t we all just get along?”

“What’s really going on between him and you, Kamenashi?” Jin responded.

Kame blushed, “What do you mean?”

“You’re dating this piece of trash, aren’t you?”

Ueda’s head fell forward and he slunk into a seat near Yamapi.

“What on earth are you talking about?” Kame attempted to deny any relationship between him and Ryo.

Yamapi, Toma, and the others watched as a fight was about to unfold right before their eyes, all in the name of love.

“What about you? You got your eyes on my Kame-chan, don’t you?” Jin asked Ryo, who was confused beyond measure.

“KAME-CHAN?!” everyone wheezed in unison.

Kame blushed and pretended to be so embarrassed by the nickname while Junno looked like he was about ready to gag.

“Your Kame-chan?! I don’t recall him every mentioning that you and he were an item,” Ryo, for some reason, felt the need to defend someone who he had no real connection to.

“Oh, so he never told you that he and I spent 6 glorious months together, did he? Why is that, Kamenashi? You think that what we had isn’t good enough to be repeated to all your little friends? Huh?” Jin grew angrier and angrier with every word that dropped out of his mouth.

Kame was obviously frustrated with Jin’s unexplainable jealousy and decided to take action with the most shocking of gestures.

Without a word, he grabbed Ryo’s arm and pulled the other man close to his body. He looked straight at Jin and said:

“Yes, it’s true, Jin. Nishikido-kun and I-we’re dating and we are very much in love! I’m sorry but it’s just the way things turned out. We would’ve announced it sooner but I never got a chance to discuss it with Nishikido-kun.”

Ueda’s face turned absolutely white, as did Jin’s. Everyone else was finding it hard to believe that Ryo and Kame were, in fact, dating one another.

“Are you serious?!” Toma squeaked.

Yamapi blinked a few times before he fully processed the news.

“You can’t be serious,” Koki scoffed.

“That’s crazy-even for you, Nishikido-kun,” Maru commented, before realizing the error of what he had said.

Ueda couldn’t say anything and just looked at Ryo, who almost instinctually looked back at him. Then, without warning, Ryo wrapped his arm around Kame’s shoulders and nodded his head.

Without taking his eyes off Ueda, he replied, “Yes, Kamenashi-kun and I are officially dating and have been for a while now.”

“This has to be a joke!” everyone clamored as they all discussed.

Ryo continued looking directly at Ueda who couldn’t find the strength to speak.

In his head, all he could think was, “Could this be real?”

END CHAPTER 8

A/N: One little note I wanted to address in case anyone was confused, about the school year set-up. In Japan, school starts in April and ends in about late March. There are three terms to each year with a break in between; summer break is about a month long and starts in late July and ends in September. In case you didn't realize it, Ueda started his freshman year a term late and ended it at the normal time. I'm sorry if this confused anyone ^^; I just wanted to make it clear so in the future, when I mention changes in time, it'll be more obvious as to how the school year is set up. Aside from that, I wanted to thank everyone who has been reading so far :) thanks for the lovely comments and if I haven't replied yet, I'll be sure to do so soon!
