The eternal optimist in me is going to take this as a positive for B and J.
3. It's more likely that CowLip would use a Be/M split to promote what I think is their personal belief of marriage not being for gay men. Don't forget that although Cow & Lip have been together for many years, they recently stated that they had no intention of ever getting married. So I can easily see them splitting up Michael and Ben for any number of trumped up reasons.
Use the Ben and Michael pair as a monogamous, married example of gay men, and use Brian and Justin as the more unconventional example such as themselves. If that makes any sense.
Right now Brian's and Michael's views on relationships are so different that there can be no common ground. Brian is promiscuous. Michael is monogamous. Neither has shown any willingness or inclination to change. This is the biggest stumbling block in a B/M pairing and I don't see how CowLip could write their way around it without totally sacrificing either or both characters.

Not only does this make a lot of sense, it's an excellent observation! I never really thought about that way...

It does make sense, but Cowlip and some of the viewers would find that completely and utterly boring and I'm not just talking about the Michael/Brian shippers. Any storyline that seems remotely realistic, they give it a surrealistic twist so that the end result is a total over-the-top soap opera ending.
Yet, Cowlip and certain fans keep wondering why QAF and any other actors on the series don't get nominations from the Emmy, SAG or Golden Globe committees.
