I know this is probably unpopular, but I'm kind of pro-draft. I'm willing to have my mind changed, but I think the draft forces people to think more critically about starting a war. It brings the war home in a way that Bush is I think deliberately trying to avoid by not releasing the names of people killed in Iraq, etc. Quote from an article on Noam Chomsky's position ( ... )

I see your point, but honestly, terror of being drafted (well, probably not me, but people I know) kind of wins out. Also, I think there's another way to go about it. If our goverment supported our troops as much as they say they do with, like, above poverty level pay and decent benefits, and didn't lie to us about the reasons we were going to war, they wouldn't have so much trouble finding people to serve. It would probably still be heavily skewed toward the poor and/or unskilled that's true, but they could bring back a focus on career service as it seemed to have during WWII, for example. If it was a decent way to gain skills and support a family, I bet more people would choose the Army than Wal-Mart.
