two really good decisions i've made in the last twenty-four hours:

-maybe accepting that incomplete in my class in lieu of sliding around in stocking feet for an hour
-making a commitment to myself to (once again) start writing SOMETHING every night, and get used to the fact that it's not all going to be brilliant.

THE END

writing constantly is the best thing you could do for yourself, but getting to that level is harder than it seems. start off with 2 or 3 times a week when you'll be putting yourself into writing mode and branch out from there. and keep a notepad and pen on you at all times so you can jot down ideas as they come. and don't go for brilliance, go for consistency. the best writers are brilliant because they deliver again and again.
and if you can get a copy, read songwriters on songwriting by paul zollo. that book is so overfilled with useful information, every page answers a question you didn't know you had.
I'm trying hard to be a good writer myself and this is just me passing along some advice I've received. best of luck to you, mel!

thanks for the advice, justyn. i used to be a consistent and prolific writer, but i guess i stopped writing every night sometime around freshman year of college, just due to having no privacy whatsoever. in the past i was always, always kept notebooks and scribbled lines down constantly, and i would write quite a bit every night before i went to bed. i became pretty good at editing myself, too... i've just gotten out of the habit, which is a shame.

i've only read one songwriting book ever, which was a waste of trees that talked about rhyme schemes, but i'll definitely look into that one. thanks for the suggestion :)

how is your writing / music coming along these days?

zollo's book is great, it's a bunch of interviews with legendary professional songwriters, so he's not paraphrasing someone else's methods into THE ONE WAY you can write songs. he knows how to ask the right questions and the eclectic mix of subjects never lets you forget that everyone has their own way of writing.
I've been ok, I've been living down in md and working at a music store. I'm always writing and playing, though nowadays it's mostly for myself. I'm just kinda drifting until something happens for the most part. I miss nyc dearly, maybe I'll scheme my way back up there soon, but right now I'm south for the winter.
