If there are any Crunchy Conservatives monitoring this community, I am curious to hear your thoughts
on Rod Dreher’s
essay on Crunchy Conservatives. Specifically his use of the phrase "culture matters more than economics"
Overall, I was pleased to hear a self-labeled conservative
express similar values as me, a self-labeled moderate-liberal.
However I do have concerns over the idea expressed in the essay
that "culture matters more than economics". Would the phrase
"thought matters more than blind consumerism" be a more fitting
phrase? I could more readily agree with that notion because
it emphasizes thoughtful consumers. Ones who ask "do I really
need this item" as opposed "to can I afford this item".
I am bothered by the use of the word culture in the original phrase
because it begs the question who defines culture. America is
multi-cultural and so accordingly the word culture means different
things to different people.
I am not writing to pick a fight about defining culture, rather
I seek to understand how “crunchy conservatives” value the statement
"culture matters more than economics". How critical is
the notion of "culture" to a crunchy-con view of the world?
Is it enough to say thoughtfulness or resourcefulness is valued?
I understand that crunchy-cons will vary on their answers,
I am just interested in hearing general thoughts.
