Where in Sarah and David have way to much fun in Hawaii

So here it is! In convenient quasi-photojournalistic glory- Sarah and David's long awaited trip to Hawaii

This nice guy gave me his lei

So I was standing in line WAY too early at LAX and I struck up a conversation with the couple behind me. The were very nice and he reminded me of my brother. So when we met again at baggage claim in Kona I introduced them to David and he gave me one of his leis under the guise that he didn't really need so many flowers .

Snorkeling rocks my world

We got up VERY early our first night on the big island -a combination of my jet lag and David's schedule being wonky because of observing. We went straight to Two Step Beach to go snorkeling. WOW. AWESOME. For starters the fish and coral were really nice but then were heard that dolphins had been spotted. !!!! :) We swam with spinner dolphins for a good 40 minutes. It was more then fantabuous - we were so close, close enough to touch. One of the dolphins was playing with a leaf, another seamed to be a mother/ calf pair. Hearing the clicks and whistles was almost as col as seeing them. I took some pictures on the underwater camera- I will share if any turn out.

We stayed at an "Artist Retreat"

It was near the town of Volcano and is really remote. THe above picture is from one of the 2 gravel roads you have to take to get there.

Woah Lava

We had to go to Volcanoes national park!

What a sight.

Coconuts in real life

So there we are driving down to the black sands beach where maybe we could see a sea turtle when I yelled out. "There are coconuts on those trees!" And pulled over to the side of the road. Now this is a very way cool Sarah experience. Coconuts! Still on the tree! So I tried to climb the tree - that didn't work so well and David thought it was very funny. Then I tried to shake the tree- that didn't work either. However, while I was experimenting David found a tool. Some one had very conveniently left a ~ 15 feet long piece of PVC pipe on the ground- perhaps another coconut hunter? With out too much difficulty he managed to knock on off the tree- seeing his success I had to try too so I knocked off another two. It was AWSOME. I didn't even really mind when there were no turtles on the beach ' cause I had knocked coconuts of a tree. We ate two of them later after I hacked them open at the Artist's retreat using a saw and a not sharp enough machete.

Turtle after all

We stopped at the black sands beach one more time and were rewarded with a turtle sighting! Spiffy.

Kauai
We spent five days on the really lovely island of Kauai. We were based out of Kapa'a where we stayed at a really nice hostel run by a really friendly yet wakko man called Mikiki. Here are some of the highlights.

Hike

We hiked past the end of the road on the east side. It was a nice but hard hike- at least for me. It took us 2 hours to get to the next beach over which was lovely but to dangerous to swim in.

Snorkel

When we got back to the car from the hike we went snorkeling. I saw so many fish and a purple eel, it was wonderful! Actually I loved it every time I went snorkeling - I could have gone every day I was there. This picture is of us after snorkeling at a light house. One day we took a surfing lesson- hopefully those pictures will come off ok from the water camera.

Nepali coast

So the northern half of Kauai is so rugged that there is no road. However you can drive up and look out over it. Wow, breathtaking.

Chickens

There are chickens all over the place in Kauai. In fact one rooster woke up David at 5am every day. Apparently a flock got loose when their farm was ripped open in a hurricane about 10 years ago.

Spouting Horn

This was my bonus tourist destination. Originally I had a noon flight and David's was at 8pm. However, I was able to give up my seat (for bonus Airline $) and got to see this neat place where the waves spout out of the lava and make a great noise.

It was such a nice trip and so nice to go after David has been to Hawaii so many times for work. I wonder where would be good to snorkel more close to home :)
