I don't normally like to complain. I'm a rather stereotypical Brit, even before my own time in the public sector, who just wants to know that I'm in the queue and someone will get round to me eventually. However, hearing that someone should be in touch a month ago and then finding out that my s-i-l appears to be getting the same answer every time ( Read more... )

I'm really glad you managed to get out for a ride in the sunshine. I'm also glad that you made the decision to pester when you did because if there's a new wing, there will be places available, but they're likely to go quickly.

It's never easy moving a loved one into residential care, but I actually think that most people (including us!) put it off too long rather than doing it too soon and end up seriously stressed themselves. It does sound as though your Dad needs specialist physical nursing care, not for an illness but because of his feeding needs. Also, as you say, the staff of a care home can leave at the end of the shift and get on with their own lives. I'm sure your father wouldn't want your life to be slipping away due to having to care for him 24/7. I hope that he'll have found a place in time for you to enjoy LonCon3 in the summer.

Well it sounds as if we got onto the list early enough to get a place, but I suspect a lot of people will have been doing what I just did and making noise, so that though we may have been on the list to be seen a month ago, we kept slipping down. I think I made a case for his needs being such that he's now seen as a reasonable priority. I don't think we'd have missed out, but we weren't any kind of priority.

Anyway, yes, it starts to sound as if LonCon3 will be a real probability. :) Now I just have to think about hotels. I shall probably sort that out once father's future is confirmed.

Good luck with finding a hotel room. I think most of the cheaper ones are booked up. I've decided to stay off site and have booked a room in on of the LSE Halls of residence. It means commuting in and out, but it's a lot cheaper, especially as I always like to have a single room, due to the need to decompress and recharge my batteries with some alone time.

Well, I wasn't expecting to be on site, so I'll just take whatever comes up when I go looking. I'm not even really sure where it is just that it's not Heathrow is it. Ah, docklands. Happy to tube it from wherever and in extremis I could stay with friends on the outskirts and commute in - would still be cheaper than a hotel. :)
