The coming Age of Storms [due to global warming] makes Japan a highly problematic location for a space elevator. They are most likely going to get hit with Super Typhoons for several decades.

The optimal physical locations are just north of Quito, Ecuador and northeast of Nairobi, Kenya. Political and security considerations make me personally tend toward Quito.

BTW I wrote a short story about all that last year: The Moon Is Red.
