On thursday, I took a half day of work because we had a doctor appointment for H at 2:00 and a "get to know you" appointment with our pediatrician at 5:00. We also had dinner plans with my law school roommate that evening. I picked H up from work and proceeded to her appointment with the OB. Her doctor was on vacation so a nurse practitioner

1. Why didn't anyone warn me about the whole delivery thing. Yikes!
2. So basically I will never get more than three continuous hours of sleep again, is that correct?

We got ours through FedEx, they were just there on the doorstep when we got home. Why? OH, you mean the kids...

It very much depends. The 3.5 year old slept through the night about 2 months in. The 1.5 year old didn't do that until last Thursday. OK, it wasn't that bad, but it was significantly longer. My advice? Do whatever the mother of your child needs for a couple of months. At that point, you both need to sit down and work out a schedule that allows you both to get enough sleep to function. This is key so that your marriage and, well, you survive.

To second what Eric said...
1) There's a big school of thought on this that frowns hard on people who tell their labor horror stories to expectant parents. Of course, it can be great fun to watch them pale up and fall down, but you get the picture. It really is different for everyone. In our case, we ended up with two scheduled c-sections, and I never saw so much as a hint of a contraction (my OBs tell me that I may well have never gone into labor on my own - crazy).
2) You will sleep. You will. I promise. What Eric said. Sometimes you fall into a routine that works for everyone (as much as that limited sleep can work). Sometimes you need to sort out who's doing what, and when, so you can function. If H is nursing, the overnights will be tougher on her for a while, but there are other things you can do to help out with that balance. Feel free to drop me a line outside of LJ if you want to know more about our experience!
