For the few of you who really care about the new cover art being released for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, here are my thoughts and theories, plus a collection of links to interesting stuff! &hearts
Whew. Okay, I'm obviously all kinds of excited but I was looking at the US Cover and it made my heart hurt. For reference:

Hoookay. So, firstly I'm assuming that Harry and Voldemort are in the same room in the Department of Mysteries that holds the veil. You know, Sirius' veil. Why? Well because I'm ALSO assuming that the curtains shown on either extreme side of the full cover are that same veil. If so.. gaaah. The veil is open. It appears to be the final confrontation, as they are facing each other alone. It could be anyone watching from behind. The shawdowy figures? I'm not sure if they're Death Eaters, members of the Order, etc. Also notice that neither Harry, nor Voldemort is holding a wand. Each of them have both hands visible, clearly sans wand. So I'm guessing the fact that their wands are "brothers" necessitates the no wand thing. Wandless magic? One would assume!
Harry looks very calm, yet determined. Voldemort appears to be staring the the same direction as Harry, but while he has both hands outstretched, Harry only has one. I wonder what this means.
I have no idea what the orange sky means, but take a look at the
UK Cover art, both sides.
Notice the same colour in the background? Although this could clearly disprove my theory, as why would this treasure vault be in the veil room? Maybe the orange sky is just a mistaken coincidence with the artists, and maybe not. Let's move on, assuming that it is.
I think this is a scene from earlier in the book. We have the Trio horcrux hunting, which is obviously dangerous. I've seen theories that Ron and Hermione look like they're falling back, but I think what's really happening is that they're being PULLED back by some magical force, while Harry is diving onward, presumably because the house elf on his back (look for it!) is helping him out with it's "own brand of magic." I'm assuming it's Dobby. Meh, because Dobby is annoying, haha.
This is probably taking place at Gringott's.. maybe in the Black vault? Harry inherited its contents from Sirius. Or maybe.. wait for it.. the Malfoy vault? Okay, I know I'm reaching, but hear me out. Maybe that's where Dobby comes into play. Since he was the Malfoys' house elf up until the end of Chamer of Secrets, couldn't there be a possibility that Lucius Malfoy forgot to remove Dobby's access to that vault? I know it seems far-fetched allowing a lowly house elf access to a vault, but can't you just see Lucius saying "Dobby, fetch me that gold cup! No, the OTHER gold cup! Now bring me the dragon armour.. I wish to wear it to the Death Easter's meeting!" or similar. Hah.
Anyway, I immediately started scanning the treasure for possible horcruxes. They could be anything! I think the dragon armour will perhaps be of use.
The
UK Adult Cover is obviously the locket horcrux, so I won't be spending any time on that except to say that the locket is quite lovely, and I wonder when they'll make the connection that either Mundungus Fletcher or Kreacher knows what happened to it?
If you're interested in more theories, check out
this entry. It's pretty long and detailed, but if you scroll down, there are links to a ton of other theories, and I believe that each theory has merit!
A couple notes unrelated to the covers, but related to the book:
- It's no secret that I'm a Draco fan. I really hope Draco doesn't end up being a throw away death at the beginning of the book. I want him to live and redeem himself, damnit!
- I believe Snape is, and always was FAITHFUL TO DUMBLEDORE.
- I can't wait to see how they'll use those two-way mirrors.
- The Harry and the Dursley's scene will be great, I know it! And we'll find out so much about EVERYTHING!
- I have a feeling that Bill and Fleur's wedding won't go uninterrupted by at least an attempted Death Eater attack, unless it's under a Fidelius charm.
In conclusion: I never really did say why the US cover made my heart hurt. Something about Harry's face, I guess. I know it's silly to say this about a book, but if you think so, you won't have read this far. ;)
I'm terrified that Harry might die. I'm also terrified that Ron and Hermione die and in that end scene, he's going along without them but knowing they're watching over him, and all the more calm and focused because of it.
I read a quote in
this article that I'll just post right here:
'Arthur Levine, editor of the American editions of the Harry Potter books, was on The Today Show briefly this morning to discuss the cover. He said that this art is, for the first time, a wrap-around cover, and has more art on it than ever before. He also said DH is a "very emotional" book, and that he didn't just cry but "sobbed" when he read it.'
I know I'll cry. I bawled my eyes out at the end of Half-Blood Prince. But a grown man sobbing? Eesh, I'm so scared.
Ah, the anticipation. I'm so thrilled that we'll finally find out what happens, but I also never want to know. However, considering I read the last book in one sitting as soon as I bought it at midnight and drove home, I'm sure I'll find out on July 21st.
