He held her tightly, pressing her head against his chest, trying to drown out the noise around them. Her body trembled, hands clutching at his shirt.
He was unable to see in the dark, their hiding place only occasionally lit by explosions around them. He knew how scared she was without seeing her face. Her whole body was tense. Every scream, explosion and tremble of the ground made her jerk.
He had never intended to bring her here, not at this time.
The planet had looked safe enough on that day, with children playing on the streets, adults chatting between advertising and selling their goods in the market place. Then night fell and the bombs came, surprising everyone, not only them but also the locals.
With luck he had found a small cave on the edge of town, just beside the street. Not as safe as he would want it to be but safer still than the small, ruinous cellars of the locals. They hadn't been prepared for an attack.
When the night went on and more and more bombs exploded on the ground, he heard Rose whimper and whisper things, names of the children who had played with her hours before, fascinated by her 'golden hair'. She cried for them, her tears soaking his shirt, sobs rocking her body. It only made him hold her tighter...
Then it stopped.
Silence fell and they waited to be sure it was over. He draped his coat over her head and told her not to look. She buried her head into his shoulder and hugged his arm, listening to him without her usual complaints, without questioning his actions. She didn't need to see... knew without looking. No one had survived.
He led her through the destroyed town, over corpses and bricks. The stench of death and burned flesh lay all around them, attacking their senses unceasingly.
He hoped the lack of sight would be enough to keep her future nightmares away. He had never wanted to show her this... not this side of the universe. She was supposed to stay innocent, bright. Not scarred and dark like he had become. He wanted her to be happy, joyful at the sight of a new planet, not trembling, shuddering with grief and sadness.
He led her back to the TARDIS and quickly closed the doors behind them. He wanted to go over to the console and send them into the Vortex but was prevented by her arm tightly hugging his. Taking his coat from her head, he gasped quietly as he saw her tear streaked face. Her eyes were swollen and empty, her whole body covered in ash. She was shivering and her skin much cooler than it should be.
“Rose, you’re in shock... we’ve got to warm you up,” he whispered to her softly, wiping a few tears away from under her eyes.
He took her hand and led her to the console, sending them into the Vortex before taking her down the corridor to her room.
They went into her bathroom, where he turned on the warm water in the shower and started to go but Rose's hand stopped him again. He wanted to ask what was wrong but the look on her face stopped him. Silent tears were running down her cheeks, removing the ash in their path.
He hugged her close again, whispering soothing nothings into her ear. When her shivers and sobs ceased, he pulled back and smiled reassuringly at her fearful face.
“Don't worry. Not going anywhere,” he said to her and slowly peeled off her dirty clothing.
Despite him having imagined this moment more than stars were in the sky, there was nothing sexual about it. Rose's skin wasn't hot under his hands but clammy cold. She wasn't shivering because of her arousal and didn't beg him to do it faster... instead, she just stood there and watched him with heavy, empty eyes.
No, this wasn't about sex. This was about trust.
Taking care of her, making her feel better... those things were on his mind as he helped her to remove her underwear and she stood naked in front of him without shame or uncertainty.
He mentioned to her to step under the water and helped wash her hair. He didn't touch her skin, just used the shower head to clean her of persistent dirt.
The water soaked his own clothing as he stepped to her under the water but he didn't care, wanting only to free her from all visible signs of their last, terrifying adventure.
He wrapped her in a big, fluffy towel afterwards, drying her wet skin. The way she looked at him was terrifying. Her wide, innocent eyes, which seemed more like those of a child, were suddenly such a contrast with her beautiful body. He tried not to wonder how much their recent experience had scarred her... was too afraid of the answer he would find.
Guiding Rose back to her room, he silently asked the TARDIS to provide nightwear for his companion and was relieved to find moments later a wide, long shirt lying on her bed. He went over to get it and then back to Rose who let her towel drop as soon as he stood in front of her again.
This time, he couldn't keep away the blush; seeing Rose bare her body to his gaze without a second thought had a far greater effect on him than taking off her clothes.
He shook his head and draped the shirt over her head, letting it fall over her fragile form. She slid her arms through the sleeves and looked at him again with those bottomless, lifeless eyes. He cupped her cheek and kissed her forehead before leading her to the bed where she sank under the covers.
He turned around to get a chair but once again her hand caught his own. “Don't go. Don't leave me... Stay with me, please!” he heard her talk for the first time after the bombing, her voice weaker than it ever should be.
He looked at her, the fear and hope inside her eyes nearly crushing his hearts. And so he stripped out of his wet clothes, lay down next to her, pulled her into his arms and made the one promise he knew he could never keep. “Forever.”
