I have this love/hate relationship with my HP betas. No offence to them really, but I dislike betas who reply with simply 'Oh, gorgeous' or 'Wonderful', without telling me what is so 'gorgeous' or 'wonderful' about said fic. Looking back at some of the fics I wrote in the past, I can pick out repeated words and phrases which are such huge no-nos in ( Read more... )

because Jan is enthusiastic about only about *writing* and not the *pairing*
Ah, I'm trying to find somebody who can critique the *writing* because I don't think I have much of a problem with the pairings.

I've learned to look out for myself and be less picky with my betas, because I *know* it's a hard job to do, and I know I suck at it, so I can't expect them to be perfect either.
But I do expect something other than an unchanged document :P
As for alphas, I do try to go through my work as thoroughly as possible - but as you know, tenses are my weakest point, especially if I write using present tense.

I can attempt to beta smut if you want haha but I have no first-hand experience, so I'll critique mainly just the language and flow, but not its plausibility.
