Notes: This was inspired by this picture from their latest Vogue Girl photoshoot.
Key knew something was wrong the moment Onew walked in the door. The boy with the blinding smile had dropping shoulders and a pale face. He walked past Key without a word and disappeared into their bedroom. Key set down the dishes in his hands and hurried after him. He reached the doorway just as Onew collapsed face first into his pillow. Taemin looked up at him with questioning eyes and he made a motion telling the boys to leave them alone. When the room was empty, Key shut the door and crawled onto the bed next to Onew.
"What happened?" he asked as he rubbed the leader's back.
Onew was silent for a few minutes but Key waited, knowing he would talk when he was ready.
"They..sa..I.b..not..h..anot...accident..or," Onew mumbled into the pillow.
"What?"
Onew flipped onto his back and covered his eyes with his arm.
"They said I better not have another accident or they're going to give me a personal bodyguard to follow me around all day."
"What!," Key yelled. "It's not like you do it on purpose! How could-"
"They're right," Onew said with a sigh. "I'm too much of a liability. All I do is screw things up."
Key was about to yell at him when there was a knock on the door.
"Manager hyung said we're leaving in five minutes," Jonghyun called.
Key pulled off Onew's arm and sighed at the tears pooling in his eyes. He gently wiped them away and bent down to hug him.
"The last thing you will ever be is a liability," Key said, kissing his forehead. "It's time to go but we're having a long talk when we get back, okay?"
Onew got up without answering and shuffled out the door to wash his face.
Key watched with worry as Onew emotionlessly went through the motions of their photoshoot. When the photographer asked him to lie down next to Onew for the next shot, Key agreed without hesitation. He crawled as close as possible without making it too obvious. As the technicians adjusted the lights and exposure, he whispered in Onew's ear.
"Don't do this. You're our leader. Look how lost the boys are with you acting like this."
"I'm sick of it," Onew replied. "I'm tired of the responsibility. I can't even get hurt without facing consequences."
"Okay Taemin, I want you to move in between them," the photographer called out.
As the magnae moved into place, Key reached out and grabbed Onew's fingers to comfort him.
"Good. Just like that."
As the camera flashed around them, Key kept his gaze on Onew's face. That lost look hurt him more than anything else Onew could have done.
When their shots were done, Key pulled Onew out the door as Jonghyun and Minho moved into position on the bed. He dragged him down the hall and shoved him into the dressing room.
"Stop the mopping around," he yelled.
Onew kept his eyes glued on the floor and didn't say a word. Key squeezed his eyes shut and groaned internally. He cupped Onew's face in his hands and lifted his head.
"Look at me," Key said. "Look. Damn it hyung, just look."
Onew tried to pull away but Key only tightened his grip and moved closer.
"Look at me because I'm not letting go."
Finally, Onew's eyes slowly rose until they met Key's.
"Don't you dare say you're a liability ever again!"
"I-"
Key yanked Onew's face forward and covered his lips with his own. Onew struggled and tried to move back but Key used every ounce of his strength to keep their faces together as he slid his lips across Onew's. As the kiss got deeper, Onew stopped moving but he took no initiative to return the kiss. Key pulled away and wrapped his arms around Onew.
"You're our leader," Key whispered in his ear. "No matter how much you screw up or fall down, you'll always be the one we look up to. Being a leader doesn't mean you have to be perfect. It just means you have to have the courage to lead us."
Key nuzzled his nose against Onew's neck before gently kissing it.
"And we will follow you wherever you go."
Key felt a warm wetness on his shoulder and looked up to see Onew's face covered with tears. Key reached up to wipe them but Onew got to it first.
"Are you okay now?"
Onew nodded and sniffled as he soaked up his tears with the tissue Key handed him.
"I know I said we would follow you anywhere," Key smirked as he snuck towards the door. "But if you're heading towards a cliff, you're on your own."
"Yay!"
Key ducked as a tissue box flew past his head and ran out the door. Onew unconsciously smiled and it slowly grew wider until he burst out into a laugh. Outside the room, Key peeked in and sighed with relief as he saw the brightness return to Onew's face.
"You probably would follow him off a cliff, wouldn't you?" Jonghyun asked, suddenly appearing next to him.
Key thought about it for a few seconds and squeezed his eyes shut as he realized just how hopelessly in love he was.
"Don't worry," Jonghyun said with a grin. "We'll make sure the two of you stay far away from cliffs."
