Ah, you're very brave to try to get into the head of Lily Evans. I like how young and uncertain she is here. It's so easy to forget that Lily and James met at 11. Left school at 18. Married at 18-19. Had a baby at 20 and were murdered at 21! This has the right feel. I like the idea of Lily working as a healer at St. Mungo's too. And I'm most impressed with this idea:

she had been reassigned to the emergency ward, where the war came when it was bloodied and tired. And it was in this place that Lily spent the last days of her pregnancy, hauling her swollen belly, her darling baby boy, from bed to bed as she administered healing charms and healing potions and healing words, when none of it was enough. And she felt the little life stirring inside of her more acutely than ever, when she was there. As though Harry could feel the contraction-like spasms of the dying men and women next to him. As though Harry knew.

Thank you! I felt the need to give my version of Lily more depth after working on her a little in "A Recipe in Four Parts", and this is what came out after much toil and trouble. I'm very happy it felt right to you. :)

Wow, this was wonderful and complex look at Lily. Definitely a slighter darker take on her relationship with James. Fascinating to see how her past with Severus affected her and them. Her observations about Remus were great, as well. I really liked it. You should post this at lilyandjames.

Thanks! I definitely wanted something a tad dark between James and Lily. After all, they only knew each other in school, got married almost right out of school and had a baby, all in the midst of a war! There's got to be more than sunshine and rainbows in a relationship like that.

She wondered, worriedly, if she had made James weaker, more susceptible, more likely to fall to an attack before this was all over.

Another said, in dismay, “Should we revive your husband?”

“I couldn’t just give up. S’not...”
“It’s not what?”
“You know. Manly. Proper.”

I loved those bits :D Made me giggle.

Overall, a nice story. A bit more angsty than I've always pictured Lily's character, but James was done nicely :D

Thanks! Yes, it is a bit angsty for Lily, but with circumstances like hers, I figure she couldn't be in chipper Head Girl mode all the time. It's just not realistic. I'm glad you liked James, though. :D
