He's making up for being a total ass in the first chapter, and of course he's realised that Dean didn't deserve the crappy treatment. Of course, now he's falling for the guy which is fraught with difficulties!

I think Dean's making the best of a bad lot, and he seems fairly neutral about the situation. It's a job, he has to do it, and that's that. I don't think he has a feeling one way or the otherm although yes, I do feel sorry for him.
