~ IN WHICH I ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT NEO-SUSPIRIA (AND ALSO REMINISCE ABOUT THE ORIGINAL TO SOME EXTENT) ~

I first heard about some European horror film called “Suspiria” (whatever that even meant*) as a teenager back in like 2002 or thereabouts, and finally saw it a year or two later. It became one of my favorite movies in general and has ( Read more... )

Great write up. It's noteworthy that most horror films tend to stick around that 90-100 minute runtime because it takes a very talented group of filmmakers to maintain an atmosphere of terror beyond that timeframe. I'd put 2018 Suspiria into the same camp as A Cure For Wellness (that starred Mia Goth incidentally) as a good film that was ultimate undone by its two and half hour runtime.

One of the pleasures of seeing films with a crowd is their reactions, so while I'm a cold and jaded bastard, I was sitting next to two young women whose squirming and palpable discomfort during the gore scenes added an extra layer of enjoyment to the movie.

Thanks. Yes, beyond 100 minutes or so you essentially start getting a film that ends up being hybridized with other genres (not that that's necessarily a bad thing), hence the considerable "drama" influence at work in much of the current boom of "prestige horror" films.

Ha, interesting. I saw it at a 10:50 a.m. showing (since I wanted to go hiking after the film) in which the audience consisted of me plus one older gentleman sitting a few rows back, so I did not have that experience. Then again, had I been at your theater, I would have been squirming in palpable discomfort while Olga was being folded up like a shirt. Dear god...
