Title: Counting the Ways - Chapter 1
Type: Multi-chapter
Word count: 1,156
Rating: G
Pairing: Koyama/Shige
Summary: Koyama and Shige describe the ways they amaze each other. Written in the first person POV of both.
Note: So this is my first multi-chapter y’all. I plan for this to be an open-ended series in that every chapter can stand for itself so I won’t feel like I’m neglecting a plot if I’m not updating it.
This series is inspired by the lyrics to “Dugeoreum” (Two Steps) by Korean singer Se7en feat. Perry. It's the English rap part which goes like this: "she got me talkin 'bout one step, two step, countin' every way you amaze me". (Lyrics credit to: frostedsnow/

Shige
Koyama? You’re asking me what amazes me about him? Oh my. Lots, really. Are you sure you want to hear about this? For all you know it could get really long and boring, not to mention silly. But I can talk for hours about that guy. I can also write endless essays about him, but we can save that for later.
One of the things about Koyama that continue to amaze me is his... well, I wouldn’t say foolishness. Stupidity? Nah, that’s too harsh. Idiocy - no, no, that’s borderline insulting. Honestly it annoys me sometimes, but in general Koyama is empty-headed in a funny and... somewhat adorable way. Of course I make fun of him all the time, but sometimes I secretly just want to pinch his cheeks really hard and croon, “How in the world can you be so cuuuuute?” Sadly I had to refrain from doing so in order to keep my dignity intact.
What I’m going to tell you right now is something that happened when Koyama first bought his own laptop. I forgot how many years ago that was - five? Six? Anyway, he bought this shiny new laptop and was really proud about it, and all the things he now could do with it. Then one day he called me in the middle of the night, panic in his voice.
“Shige! Please, you gotta help me, it’s an emergency!” He sounded close to crying, and though my initial intention was to yell at him for waking me up, once I heard what he said I jumped out of bed and headed to his house as fast as I could. Feeling a bit scared of what I might find there, I got in with my spare key and saw a distraught Koyama sitting in front of his laptop.
“Oh Shige, thank God you’re here,” relief washed over his face when he saw me. Grabbing the arm of my jacket, he dragged me closer and pointed at the laptop. An empty word processing document was open at the screen. “I don’t know what to do about this!”
“About what?” I peered at the document. Nothing seems to be wrong there. Koyama stood up from the chair and made me sit there. Really, he just picked me up like a kitten and pushed me down to sit. Despite his slender frame the guy can have surprising strength sometimes.
“You see, I have this document where I write some lyrics, and I’ve collected quite a few of them there. But when I was working on it today I pushed the wrong keys and suddenly it all vanished!” He was quite near hysterical now. “I don’t know what to do, I don’t remember what I pushed and I don’t know how to fix it. Can you do something, Shige? Please? Can you save it?”
“Okay! Okay. Calm down for a moment,” I gripped his shoulders and looked him straight in the eye. “Koyama? Hey, take a deep breath, okay? Just calm down.”
“Right. Calm. Breath.” He seemed to be trying hard to get himself together. “Just... I need you to fix it. Please.”
“Alright, let me see what I can do.” Keeping the corner of my eye fixed on my nervous friend, I turned to face the monitor. It was a regular document. No sign of a virus or anything. I checked the antivirus and as predicted everything was quite normal. Could it be... no, that’s impossible. But knowing Koyama, pretty much anything is possible. I ventured to click the Undo button and voila, the previously empty document was suddenly filled with ten pages of writings that emerged out of thin air.
Koyama was open-mouthed with astonishment. “What- How did you do that? Oh my God, Shige, you did it!” He flung his arms around my neck and nearly suffocated me.
“Koyama,” I said after managing to extricate myself from his death grip, “you deleted everything you’ve written and then didn’t know where to find the Undo button?”
He tilted his head and put on one of his innocent but irritating gee-I-don’t-know-what-you’re-talking-about look. “What’s an Undo button?”
Amazing, I’m telling you. Amazing.
Koyama
Aaaah, he told you about that? Just won’t let that one go, huh? Let's be fair, I certainly wasn’t as knowledgeable about computers back then as I am now. But there he was, looking at me like an extra pair of ears just sprouted on my head.
“You don’t know what an Undo button is?” he asked incredulously.
I scratched the back of my neck absentmindedly. “Well... you never told me about it.”
“How is it my fault that you don’t know the smallest thing about word processors?”
“But it’s a technical jargon, right? I’m sure there are lots of people who don’t know it.” Just when he was going to open his mouth for another rebuttal, I cut in quickly, “Then show me. What does that button do actually?”
This is a reliable method I’ve been using for years to distract Shige: asking him to explain things to me. That way I can stop him from making fun of me and simultaneously boost his ego by letting him show off how smart he is. He won’t admit this but we both know he loves it when he gets to teach me stuff. Just to prove how right I was, he sighed as if showing unwillingness but then proceeded to point at the screen and explained what the button does. He’s so easy.
“Oi. Are you listening?” he poked my waist with his elbow.
“Of course. So... Ctrl+Z is the shortcut for Undo and Ctrl+Y is for Redo, right?” I beamed proudly at him.
“That’s it,” he nodded. “So now that you get it, can you please don’t call me up at 11 PM and force me to come to your house again? I was dead asleep, for goodness sake.”
I threw my hands in the air. “What was I supposed to do? I panicked. Besides, who else could I have called?”
At hearing this Shige’s face changed a little. I could see he was trying to hide his obvious pleasure from hearing that he was someone I always count on. At that time he was still in this awkward phase when any outward sign of affection made him uneasy. I remember it rather frustrated me every once in a while, but more often it just made me want to love him more. Casually putting an arm on his shoulder, I bent over and kissed him on the forehead. “Thanks for coming to my rescue,” I said.
His only response was a slight grin, but I knew better. We complement each other, Shige and I. When you figure it out, if I were as smart as he is we’d probably have a different dynamic in our relationship and wouldn’t be as close as we are now. After all, what’s life without my Shige-sensei?
