“I’ve recently discovered that what I read before bed affects my dreams,” Koyama says aloud, sitting on the bed and fluffing the pillows.
Yamapi saunters in from the adjoining bathroom and plops down on the bed, a lazy, amused smile on his face. “Is that so?”
Koyama nods. “Like, if I read a detective story, I’ll become a detective in my dreams. When I read a love story-”
“You’ll dream you’re in love?” Yamapi’s smile turns playful. “And who, I wonder, is your lover in those dreams?”
Koyama leans close to the other man, his breathy voice tickling Yamapi’s ear. “I’ll tell you if you agree to read together tonight.”
With a voice like that, Yamapi decides he’d prefer listening to the audio version. “Why don’t you read for me? I’ll pick the book.” He gets up and heads over to Koyama’s bookshelf, running a finger along the spines before reading a title aloud, “Murder on the Orient Express.”
Koyama grimaces. “Not in the mood for murders tonight.”
Yamapi shrugs and goes on. “Here’s one: Love in the Time of Cholera. Love story, I bet?”
“It has ‘cholera’ in the title,” replies Koyama sheepishly.
“Ah,” Yamapi mutters in understanding. That would probably trigger not-so-pleasant dreams. Yamapi scans the titles once more and then pulls out one book. “How about Stardust by Neil Gaiman? It says that it’s a fairytale for adults.”
Koyama nods, finally satisfied, as he watches Yamapi settle back into bed. “Sounds good. I like fairytales.”
Yamapi hands him the book. “I bet you also like the adult part. -Ow.” He rubs his side where Koyama had elbowed him. “Just kidding. Come on, read it.”
So they both sit against the headboard, Koyama propping the book up on his lap and reading aloud while Yamapi listens intently beside him. Hearing Yamapi’s soft breathing next to him makes Koyama relax, and he breezes through a whole chapter without realizing. It’s not until he feels hair tickling his neck that he notices Yamapi had fallen asleep, head leaning on his shoulder.
He smiles and sets the book aside on the nightstand before gently moving Yamapi to lie down properly. Yamapi lets out a vague hum as Koyama lies down himself and pulls the blanket up to their chests.
He kisses Yamapi’s forehead and whispers, “Good night.” Fairytale or not, he knows exactly who will be in his dreams tonight.
