Shige sat down next to Koyama, his stare fixed on the floor like he was unable to look him in the eye. “I’m sorry,” he mumbled. “I searched everywhere but couldn’t find it.”
Koyama was disappointed but tried not to show it. He put a hand on Shige’s shoulder gently. “It’s all right, Shige.”
The younger man finally lifted his gaze, streaks of remorse etched on his face. “I didn’t mean to lose the necklace, I really didn’t.”
Koyama knew why he said that: when Koyama first gave him the necklace he had complained half-jokingly that Koyama buying him jewelry made it seem like he was the girlfriend. But he wore it anyway, making Koyama smile when he saw it hanging from Shige’s neck, close to his heart. Shige was probably afraid Koyama would think he lost the necklace on purpose, but Koyama knew better than to accuse him of something like that. Shige wasn’t too big on displaying his affections freely, but he wasn’t mean either.
“I’ll look for it again,” Shige promised. “There must be some place I missed. Maybe it’s piled under my photography equipment, or I left it at the drama set. I’ll ask the staff tomorrow-”
“Shige, hey.” Koyama put a hand in front of him as a signal to stop talking. “Come here for a while.” He pulled Shige in and led him to settle, at first reluctantly, within the comfort of his arms.
“I normally don’t lose things like this,” Shige insisted, then adding in a quieter voice, “I really am sorry.”
“I know.” Koyama cradled him, kissing his hair. “I told you it’s okay.”
Shige snuggled his head under Koyama’s chin and stayed still there, a hand on Koyama’s chest, before letting out a groan. “Oh God, now I really am the girlfriend.”
That was two weeks ago. Koyama had forgotten about the necklace affair entirely when Shige called him as he was walking away from a photoshoot. He could hear the excitement in Shige’s voice when he said, “I found it.”
“What? Did you mean...”
“Yes, the necklace.” Shige chortled, obviously very pleased with himself. “It was at the very back of my closet. Must’ve dropped it there when I was cleaning.”
“Shige, that’s awesome!” Koyama gushed. “See, you had nothing to worry about.”
Koyama was reminded of how Shige’s laughter was probably the best sound one can hear over the phone. Shige continued: “Actually, I’m wearing the necklace right now. At your apartment.”
“Really? But I was just gonna go to your place!”
“I wasn’t finished. I’m in your bedroom, wearing the necklace-” he paused for dramatic effect, “-and nothing else.”
“Oh.” Koyama’s insides made a little leap. “Oh. Well, I guess... I should get there soon then.”
“You better,” purred Shige. “I’ll be waiting.”
Hanging up the phone, Koyama sprinted a bit faster to his car. The way things were going, he might consider buying Shige more jewelry after this.
