everybody wants to be a cat [Background]
Any sense of Boris's past is essentially shrouded in mystery, as there isn't much known about him. The only surefire info we have about him before Alice's arrival is that he lives in the amusement park and seems to be on relatively good terms with the Hatter family, or at the very least their gatekeepers. He also seems to have a recurring streak of mischief, often sneaking into Vivaldi's castle for the fun of it despite the obvious danger. But whether he has any family or any otherwise important points of his life to make note of are left unmentioned.
Everything starts to get interesting when Alice Liddell showed up in their wonderful world. Boris was one of the last role holders to welcome the curious foreigner, first meeting her when the twins introduced the two. When she came to question the seemingly good-natured relationship between a cat from the amusement park and the gatekeepers under the direction of the Blood Dupre (a rather curious sight considering the "power struggle" she had heard about), Boris simply waved it off. After all, he was just a free-loader and the position of the twins weren't that high in the Hatter hierarchy. Keeping that in mind, it wasn't as if they were actually enemies or anything. Lesson #1 in Cheshire Cat Logic.
Somehow in the course of the conversation, it came to the topic of the owner of the amusement park (lovingly referred to as the "Old Man" by Boris) absolutely hates Blood Dupre, for some mysterious reason. Boris admits that if Blood did to him what he did to the Old Man, he'd want to kill him too. That's when Boris lets the secret loose and unveils the absolutely dastardly deed that Blood carried out. Apparently the mafia boss had decided to spread the first name of the Old Man, and it became known that his full name was Mary Gowland-- or if you will, Merry Go Round. ♥ But despite the fact that he just sealed the fate of some awful events ahead, Boris happily extended an invitation to Alice that she should visit the park when she got the time.
A fair amount of time passed before Boris came by again, arriving at the clock tower doorstep, Tweedle Dee and Dum in tow. That was the day he decided to make good on his word to take Alice to the amusement park. Refusing to take no for an answer, he insisted that she go (deciding to "borrow" her), and even had the courtesy to invite Julius as well. However he only chose to remember the clock keeper's distaste for roller coasters just a few moments too late. Oops~ Nonetheless, their original goal was met as Alice ws promptly guided straight to the amusement park. Not far from the entrance, they ran into Mr. Gowland himself, who found it would be a fantastic idea to serenade Alice by ways of greeting, despite Boris's attempt to dissuade him. Terrible violin playing went on for a few traumatic moments and it was only ceased by Alice's use of Gowland's full name. And much like turning on a light switch, Gowland went into a fit of frustration. Now is when Boris then took upon himself the great task of leading Alice away from the raging mad man. ♥
Sadly their fun was cut short as Blood Dupre himself conveniently picked that day to grace the park with his presence and proceed to egg on Mary Gowland further. Needless to say, chaos ensued. (Thanks for that, Mad Hatter. :|) However it was made up to Boris as he got to later attend the tea party at the Hatter's, though whether he got a formal invite or just felt like crashing can be left to the imagination. It was there that he had the honor of watching Alice harass Elliot. He also played the role of messenger that since their park day had been ruined, Alice was going to get a free pass to the place. All's well that ends well, right?
Unfortunately things wouldn't be so easy for him for long. The next time he felt like dropping by the castle uninvited, he had a bit of resistance and ended up in a gunfight with one of the guards. Stumbling his way back home, he ended up running to Alice, who was less than happy to find him so badly wounded. Though he couldn't find anything wrong with him getting so injured, despite her apparent concern. Nonetheless, it wasn't long before he was bandaged up, at home, and conferring with Alice about how weird it was that she cared about him. It was then that he admitted that he cared about Alice too, but she was the only one he cared about seeing as he was the only one who cared about him. The conversation had a considerable effect on him, convincing him to reform his ways enough that he'd have more concern for his own life.'
And yet, he still retained his endless sense of curiosity, since the next time he meets up with Alice, who is rather upset after dealing with Blood, he admits that… yeah, he kinda sneaked into the castle again. But he didn't get hurt. Noticing that she's a bit less than happy, he decides to demonstrate just how good he is at cheering people up. He offers her a riddle (one that makes more sense in the original Japanese, orz). When you have two of the same flower, it will scatter, he says, what kind of flower is it? He proceeds to demonstrate when he decides that time's up, pulling out the answer: a rose (or bara, if you would). "Bara and bara make… barabara!" Barabara meaning scatter, he succeeded in cheering her up with his little pun.
The next time he stumbled upon Alice is when he's on but another excursion to the Queen of Hearts's castle. Finding Alice amidst a scene of carnage, he looked for a way to cheer her up once more. Making use of her free pass to the amusement park, he takes her there in attempts to distract her from whatever left her saddened. Taking her all around the park, that's when Gowland decides to intervene and give them the chance to ride an attraction that was still in the final testing stages. One misunderstanding leads to another and they end up being forced to go on it, even if the safety tests aren't completely finished. Alice unfortunately ends up passing out and taken to the first-aid room, where Boris starts apologizing for what happened. When it comes to reveal that there'd been a mishap in communication, as Gowland apparently thought that the two were on a date, Boris admits that he was just doing it to make Alice happy.
Aaaand it can be assumed that he took a cat nap sometime after that, thus leading to his appearance in Somarium~
[Personality]
Like a cat in almost every way, Boris is a very easy-going person. No place he has to be, nothing he needs to do, just where he wants to be and doing what he finds fun. Plenty of times, he seeks entertainment more than anything else, and it ends with a total disregard for his well-being. If he had fun sneaking into the queen's castle, what's the big deal about a gunfight or six? And he's arrogant enough to think that he won't die from a couple wounds, and it's not like they catch him all the time either. So why fear the reaper when cats have nine lives?
Even when confronted about his nonchalance for death, it doesn't change his way of thinking too much. If he's going to protect himself better, it would hardly be for his sake. There's rarely anyone he actually cares bout, and the only reason he'd try to avoid death is because if he was dead, he couldn't see that important person anymore. When encountering someone who actually cares about him, he's very surprised. In a world where replacements are easy to come by and getting yourself injured isn't anyone else's problem and receives no compassion, it's not a surprise he's shocked when someone bothers to worry about him.
After forming a bond with someone he, like a typical cat, becomes deftly loyal and places their life and happiness above all else. He'd be willing to place himself in danger for them, quite different from his usual whimsical ways. But after his talk with Alice, he'd hesitate on aiming to kill someone she knows, because it would make her sad. It's for that same reason he avoids getting killed himself. So while he may end up still inuring others or suffering injury himself, he will do his best to receiving or delivering that fatal blow.
Though it's not often he's faced with such a decision to begin with. His time is more commonly occupied with how to spend his day in the most enjoyable way possible, whether it be going to an amusement park with a friend or sneaking into a few forbidden places. Much like a stray, he enjoys going from place to place and can only rarely stay on the same conversational topic for long due to that fickle nature of his.
[Specialties/Abilities]
His catlike nature doesn't halt at his unending curiousity and fickle nature. It can be guessed that he has some pretty impressive jumping skills, seeing as his preferred method of entering the castle is scaling the wall and hedges. Judging from his claims to rarely get caught when sneaking into the castle, he likely has some pretty impressive stealth skils as well. After all, he'd have been more likely to lose a few lives as opposed to just suffering an injury or four if he was a poor ninja spy … cat.
And like everyone else in the series, he comes readily equipped with a weapon. His happens to come in the form of a gun (that is pink and totally menacing, shut up). He seems to be pretty good with it, and his room is apparently decorated with the things. But since his talk with Alice, his goals have changed and he no longer shoots to kill (though he can) and prefers to instead injure. His stamina is also pretty impressive, seeing as he can manage to retain consciousnesss and drag himself wherever he needs to go despite suffering pretty substantial injuries.
Update [12/1]
So I've made a use of this recently revealed skill of his already but-- According to Joker no Kuni no Alice, Boris is able to cross space and dimensions with the use of a fabulous pink door that appears out of thin air. While he can't escape from Somarium, he can cross quite a distance as he moves from place to place, making use of this door. It'll appear whenever he wants, lead wherever he wants, and disappear wherever he wants. I lovingly refer to it as the magical pink door. Or as Winger says, the MPD. The reasoning behind this door? "The Cheshire Cat goes wherever he wants." Thanks for that, Quinrose.
[Affection]
Boris would happily engage in physical contact, whether it be a pat on the back for someone else or maybe a hug. He's really got no issues with that. And as far as what he thinks of physical contact, he wouldn't mind too much. As long as it's someone he's on (at least) okay terms with, he won't complain about a hug or anything.
Update [11/21]
So! After collecting some more info about Boris's part in the actual game, I'd say the above is still generally correct. If it's a creeper like Vincent giving him a hug, Boris's first reaction might be to just elbow him in the gut. ♥ But! Then there's the thing about just how affectionate Boris can get. Like everyone else in HnKnA, Boris is shown.... well, essentially badtouching Alice without the slightest shred of a conscience. (Apparently Boris, Blood, Peter, and Ace are some of the worst culprits of this, hur hur.)
Now Boris will probably be less attracted to the girls he meets around Somarium than he is to Alice (it's the whole 'foreigner' thing), so the chances of him jumping them are considerably less. |D But he still probably won't shy away from his instincts that tell him to go for a kiss or another teasing gesture. My apologies in advance if he makes an advance that might catch your character off-guard. It's just what he does. I'll be sure to give a heads-up or ask in advance before he goes and licks their face or anything. :|a
[Fighting]
Well, Boris is quite likely to pull out a gun on his own soooo, injuries are fine! However killing is something that he personally wouldn't allow to be done to himself, and he wouldn't do it to anyone else either. But if he senses malice, he'll probably threaten to shoot someone or at least graze them. Or disappear fabulously~
[Other Facts]
He likes riddles, sneaking into forbidden places, and enjoys jumping from topic to topic in a conversation. So, honestly? He's a lot like a cat. That's all that needs to be said.
